Replacements For Willie Randolph

I don’t think that I need to re-hash the reasons that Willie Randolph may be fired. I’ve posted several times about that here. After the losing home stand against the Reds and Nationals, I think that it’s a foregone conclusion that the Mets front office will fire Randolph soon. I thought that they would wait until the end of May to evaluate him. But now I’m convinced that a change needs to be made.
The timing of firing Randolph will be interesting. They won’t do it immediately right before the Yankees series, and then the Mets leave town for Atlanta and Colorado. So they’ll probably make the change after road trip barring a miraculous performance on the road.
The Mets are back home on May 26th to face the Marlins and then the Dodgers. That’s most likely the time to make the change. As soon as they get back before the Marlins series.
It’s time to start putting together a short list of potential replacements. So far I’ve come up with:
- Jerry Manuel- The easiest transition because he’s been with the team as bench coach. It wouldn’t be a complete “shake up” but would get the point across that some people will go if the team doesn’t turn things around.
- Larry Bowa- He’s an experienced manager and would certainly leave the Dodgers for a chance to manage again. He would really shake things up with his fiery personality.
- Wally Backman- The disgraced Mets lost the D-Backs managerial job after four days in 2004. I’m not sure if the Mets would trust this team to him.
- Buck Showalter- Former Yankee, D-Backs, and Rangers manager is no-nonsense and would restore order quickly. He’s currently working for ESPN.
- Buck Martinez- Former Blue Jays and Team USA manager currently working for MLB broadcasting.
- Lee Mazzilli- Former Orioles manager knows the team well from his work for SNY.
- Don Baylor- Cubs and Rockies manager, bench coach for the Mets in 2003-2004.
- Jack McKeon- He’s 77 now but might come in for one year.
- Bobby Valentine- I don’t know if the front office wants to deal with him again, but he would probably take the job.
- Davey Johnson- He might come back again. I don’t know if he’s dead set on not managing in MLB again.
- Sam Perlozzo- Former Orioles manager (there’s a lot of them).
