New York Mets (11-16) at Philadelphia Phillies (18-8) 8:05pm
Chris Young (1-0 2.65) vs. Cliff Lee (2-2 4.18)
TV:ESPN Radio: WFAN
What to watch: The Mets and Phillies play their second straight national TV game as the Mets try to avoid the sweep in Philly. It won’t be easy against Lee but the D-Backs did get to him in his last start for 4 runs over 7 innings.
Young has made one start since coming off the disabled list with bicep tendinitis. He was shaky in DC going 4.2 innings and allowing 3 runs. He seemed to run out of gas in the fourth and fifth innings but should be in better shape after being back for nearly a week.
I’ll be doing a Mets fan pre-game show tonight live streaming with Kerel Cooper of On The Black. It’s a completely interactive show, so join us to talk about the topics you’re interested in with other Mets fan. The show is scheduled to start at 7pm Eastern time and you can see and join the show at the MetsReport.com page at Ustream TV.
Join us at 7pm Eastern time for the Mets fan pre-game show before the Mets-Phillies Sunday Night Baseball game tonight. I’ll be co-hosting with Kerel Cooper of On The Black and we’re planning a great interactive show.
The Mets are sporting a three game losing streak and face Cliff Lee tonight in Philly. They haven’t faced Lee since 2009 and he only had one start but he went 7 innings and didn’t allow an earned run.
The live streaming pre-game show is completely interactive. Audience members can chat and we’ll address topics that the audience brings up. Unlike the SNY pre-game show, we can address topics like the Mets financial situation and the reports that the Mets are having a hard time selling a minority stake in the team.
You can watch and join the show below when we go live at 7pm Eastern time.
New York Mets (11-15) at Philadelphia Phillies (17-8) 1:10pm
Jon Niese (1-3 5.10) vs. Roy Halladay (3-1 2.41)
TV:Fox Radio: WFAN
What to watch: The Mets will have a tough time trying to shake off their embarrassing loss last night against Halladay. He was vintage in his last start against the Padres going 8.2 innings and allowing 1 run with 14 K’s.
Niese also had a good start his last time out against the D-Backs going 7 innings and only allowing 2 runs for his first win of the season. He has 4 career starts against Philly for a 1-2 record with a 3.96 ERA. In Philly, he’s 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA.
The Mets got rocked in this game even worse than the score indicates. They were down 10-0 going into the ninth inning. Ike Davis and Jason Pridie hit homers in the ninth to make it somewhat respectable. Mike Pelfrey looked decent after overcoming a nasty flu but lost it in the fourth and fifth innings and ended up allowing 4 runs in 4.1 innings.
Dillon Gee had a bad debut out of the bullpen too. Ryan Howard ripped a grand slam off Gee for his second homer of the game. It was ugly all the way around for the Mets tonight.
New York Mets (11-14) at Philadelphia Phillies (16-8) 7:05pm
Mike Pelfrey (1-2 7.23) vs. Joe Blanton (0-1 5.92)
TV: SNY Radio: WFAN
What to watch: The Mets already lost a series in Philly in the first week of the season. Pelfrey had his worst start of the season in that series, and that’s saying something. He only went 2 innings and allowed 6 earned runs.
The Phillies are just half a game behind the Rockies for the best record in baseball. They’re coming off a west coast road trip where they swept four games in San Diego and then lost two of three to Arizona. Blanton has pitched really well in his last two starts after a rough beginning to the season. He’s only allowed 4 runs in 14 innings in his last two starts.
New York Mets (3-2) at Philadelphia Phillies (4-1) 3:05pm
Jon Niese (0-0, 2.57) vs. Roy Halladay (0-0, 1.50)
TV: SNY Radio: WFAN
What to watch: The Mets and Phillies play the rubber game of the series this afternoon before the Mets head home for their home opener tomorrow. Niese had a nice start in Florida going 7 IP and allowing 2 runs in a 6-4 win. Halladay went 6 IP in his first start against Houston allowing 1 run in a 5-4 win.
The Mets are showing some fight in this early season. That’s something we haven’t seen in a couple of years. Expect Halladay to be tough to hit but the Mets could give him a run for his money.
Here’s the post game reaction from Terry Collins and Mike Pelfrey to last night’s loss to the Phillies. You can read the full game recap here. It was an ugly loss and the second straight bad start for Pelfrey.
Mike Pelfrey had a second straight terrible start only going 2 IP and giving up 7 runs (6 earned). He was completely out of sorts. It looked like a regression to a couple of years ago. He was talking to himself, chewing on his glove, and had a crazy error in the field. It was bad all the way around.
The Mets made a furious comeback with 2 runs in the fourth inning and 5 more in the fifth to tie it at 7-7. Angel Pagan hit a 2-run homer in the fourth. Then they strung together hit after hit to score 5 runs and chase Joe Blanton in the fifth inning.
Blaine Boyer gave 2 runs back in the bottom of the fifth and Ben Francisco hit a solo shot in the sixth off Boyer. Francisco has been hitting the cover off the ball, so I wasn’t surprised to see him finally get one over the wall.
The Mets will have a tough time taking the rubber game tomorrow against Roy Halladay tomorrow. It would’ve been nice to win the series against Blanton tonight.
