The Mets jumped all over Chien-Ming Wang scoring 4 runs in the first inning. They greeted Wang rudely in his first start in more than two years. The offense continued to be in high gear as they had 12 hits and 1 walk. Ronny Paulino had the big game going 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Dillon Gee was solid and made it into the seventh inning allowing only 2 earned runs. Bobby Parnell and Tim Byrdak did their best to give the game back in the eighth inning allowing the sorry Nationals to score 2 late runs. But D.J. Carrasco killed the rally and, once again, Jason Isringhausen shut the door in the ninth.

The Mets are taking to their role of spoiler for the NL Central’s second place Cardinals. Dillon Gee put together an excellent start going 7 innings and allowing only 2 runs. He didn’t give up a hit until the fifth inning. I have to admit that I was thinking about a no-hitter. Gee is the kind of pitcher that could finally do it for the Mets. Bobby Parnell was shaky in the eighth inning giving up two hits and hitting a batter but he got out of trouble. Jason Isringhausen finished the game and got his first save since 2008.

The Mets had some serious offense going with 14 hits and 3 walks. But they left 13 runners on base. Ronny Paulino and Carlos Beltran led the team with 3 hits apiece. It was a nice return game for Beltran and Jose Reyes coming back from the disabled list.

The Mets are going crazy on offense right now. 14 runs last night and 20 tonight. Who knew the Mets had it in them? Scott Hairston’s bases loaded triple in the first inning got the party started and it never stopped. They assaulted the Tigers with 20 hits and 7 walks in the game. Ronny Paulino hit cleanup and went 4 for 6 with 4 runs scored. Angel Pagan also chipped in 4 hits, 3 runs, and 4 RBI’s. The offensive numbers are just silly.

The Mets pitching wasn’t anything to brag about. Chris Capuano gave up 5 runs in 5 innings and ended his run of excellent starts. Without the silly offense, he would’ve lost most games. Pedro Beato didn’t look great giving up 2 runs. And there was a bizarre incident like I’ve never seen before in the seventh inning. Terry Collins brought in Tim Byrdak even though he wasn’t warming up in the bullpen. Byrdak promptly gave up a homer to the first batter he faced, and had some words for Collins on his way out of the game.

The Mets won’t have it so easy against Justin Verlander tomorrow. Mike Pelfrey will need to bring his “A” game.

Chris Capuano was solid again but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Angels. It was a back and forth game throughout the night. But Justin Turner’s throwing error in the second inning allowed an unearnred run to score was the difference in the game.

Capuano went 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs but he did it on 92 pitches. So it wasn’t the sharpest game he’s had this season but it should have been good enough to win the game.

The Mets offense was led by Angel Pagan who was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. He did a great job of putting the ball in play that scored runs and kept innings alive. Ronny Paulino was also 2 for 4 with 2 doubles.

The Mets took a tough loss in the bottom of the ninth in this one. What’s worse, is that it was a well pitched game by Mike Pelfrey and Randy Wolf through the first 6 innings. The Mets were down 2-1 after the sixth on a Prince Fielder home run. The Mets scored 5 runs in the seventh off Kameron Lowe on a rally that Jose Reyes (who else?) started.

The Mets bullpen couldn’t hold the lead with Pedro Beato, Jason Isringhausen, and Dale Thayer gave up 5 runs in the final two innings to blow the lead and lose the game.

The Mets offense was solid and the seventh inning explosion was teed up by Reyes but Ronny Paulino hit a 3-run homer. He was 4 for 4 on the night with 3 RBI’s. Big night for Paulino.

The Mets and Brewers will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow night.

The Mets were destroyed in ugly fashion by the Cubs tonight after dealing with owner Fred Wilpon’s nasty comments about several players. The team had a meeting in the locker room before the game to clear the air but it certainly didn’t work judging by the outcome of this game.

The Mets had three errors in the game and allowed 5 unearned runs. The lack of concentration in the field was almost comical. There were several misplays that weren’t called errors either. It was just ugly all the way around.

Jon Niese wasn’t sharp and didn’t get any help from the defense. He threw 86 pitches through 5 innings and allowed 2 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk.

The Mets did have 9 hits and 1 walk in the game but left 8 runners on base. Jose Reyes, Ronny Paulino, and Ruben Tejada had 2 hits apiece but there wasn’t much else happening offensively.

Giants 2 – Mets 0 May 4, 2011

Tim Lincecum

The Mets lost their fifth of six games and were totally outclassed by Tim Lincecum. The Giants don’t hit much but they don’t need it when Lincecum is pitching. He went 7 innings and had 12 strikeouts. The Mets did leave 9 runners on base, so they had some chances that they couldn’t capitalize on. But between Lincecum and four relievers the Mets struck out an astounding 16 times tonight.

Chris Capuano had a really nice start tonight going 6.1 innings and allowing 2 runs. He looked good even though he allowed 8 hits and 3 walks. He was focused with runners on base and was really into the game. It was a solid start.

The Mets didn’t have much offense to talk about. Carlos Beltran and Ronny Paulino each had 2 hits but the team only managed 6 hits in the game.

The seats were almost completely empty and you could hear the “Let’s Go Giants” chants on the SNY broadcast. It’s a sad day when a west coast team is getting more support at Citi Field than the Mets.

Mets 2011 Salaries Page

July 23, 2010 Los Angeles, CA..Mets Johan Santana in action during the Major League Baseball game between the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Mets defeated the Dodgers, 6-1..Josh Thompson/CSM.

The Mets roster and salary page has been updated to reflect the 2011 roster to date. You can see that the Mets are committed to about $122 million so far with the additions of D.J. Carrasco and Ronny Paulino in free agency. Also, Angel Pagan’s contract hasn’t been resolved yet but will likely be prior to arbitration.

There really isn’t a lot of room for the new Mets brain trust of Sandy Alderson, J.P. Ricciardi, and Paul DePodesta to make moves. Unfortunately, that means that we’ll likely have to suffer through another subpar season.

The other problem is that Johan Santana is taking up 18% of the payroll and won’t be able to play until July because of shoulder surgery this offseason. That’s a killer for any team, much less a struggling team like the Mets.

Things look really good for 2012 though. I’m sure that’s why Alderson and friends decided to come to the Mets. They have a chance to do a complete makeover of this team with half of the payroll going off the books. They’re going to have some fun spending the Wilpon’s money next offseason.

If you want to get a primer for the players that will likely be available in free agency before the 2012 season, check out MLB Trade Rumors. The big names will be Prince Fielder, Albert Pujols, Mark Buehrle, Edwin Jackson, Heath Bell, and Booklyn’s David DeJesus.
