Mets Angel Pagan Arrested In Florida

MLB: MAR 04 Spring Training - Mets at Nationalshttp://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js
Several media outlets are reporting today that Mets OF Angel Pagan was arrested in Florida yesterday after being stopped for speeding on I-95. The Florida state trooper ran a routine check of Pagan’s license and found out that it was suspended. Apparently, he has warrants out for him for unpaid traffic tickets from 2005 and failure to appear in court for those tickets.

Pagan has been in Florida rehabbing after having right elbow surgery during spring training. I know that Mets ownership hates to appear in the police blotter. But this certainly isn’t a terrible offense like Ambiorix Burgos. Although embarrasing, it certainly isn’t at the level of David Cone exposing himself in the bullpen or Mark Corey and Tony Torasco smoking pot near the stadium.

Game Preview: Pirates at Mets [Game 28] May 8, 2009

pirates-logoPittsburgh Pirates (12-16 Road: 5-9) at New York Mets (14-13 Home: 8-6)  7:10 pm

Jeff Karstens (1-1 5.85) vs. Jonathan Niese (0-0 0.00)

What to watch:  The Pirates come to town losing 9 of their last 10 games. They had a good start but completely lost it, not unlike the Marlins. Karstens last two starts haven’t been very good and he hasn’t won a game since April 23. Niese hasn’t been great in the minors this season but makes his season debut in place of the “injured” Oliver Perez tonight. This one has the makings of a high scoring game, even in spacious Citi Field.

Mets 7- Phillies 5 May 7, 2009

The Mets got another 2-game series sweep for their fourth win in a row. Most of this win was thanks to Jamie Moyer would had nothing tonight. He gave up 2-run homers to Carlos Beltran and David Wright in the first inning and 7 runs in his 2.1 innings of work.

Mike Pelfrey had a pretty good game tonight getting through 7 innings and giving up 3 runs. Oddly, he didn’t have any strikeouts for the second consecutive start.

Jerry Manuel was thrown out of the game after arguing a call made on a run-down play. Shane Victorino was in a run-down and stuck out his arm to get contact with Jose Reyes. The first base umpire called obstruction and awarded Victorino second base. It was bad call. Manuel might get a suspension though as he bumped hats with the umpire. That contact could get him a game or two suspension.

A very good sign tonight was that Wright 3 for 3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI’s and a walk. His home run was a straight away bomb to center field that landed right next to the apple. Hopefully, he can start something with the bat. He looked better tonight hitting than I’ve seen him in quite a while.

Mets To Start Niese; Perez To DL

jon-nieseThe Mets finally found a way to get Oliver Perez off the 25-man roster. He had an MRI yesterday and was diagnosed with tendinitis in his right knee. Tendinitis can be varying in its severtity, so I wonder how bad it really is. But the Mets got their wish, Perez can go to the disabled list and then make some rehab starts in Florida to figure out his pitching problems.

Jonathan Niese is being called up from Triple-A Buffalo to start Friday night against the Pirates. Niese hasn’t been very good at Buffalo this season going 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA in 5 starts. I haven’t seen the big league potential in Niese that others have but I hope he can have more success against the resurgent Pirates than he’s had in the minors this season.
