Mets 6 – Nationals 1 May 26, 2009

Tonight’s game was the Livan Hernandez show. He went the distance only giving up a solo homer to Adam Dunn. He gave up 9 hits and 1 walk and threw 127 pitches in the game.

The Mets offense was solid but the big hit came from Gary Sheffield. For the second night in a row he hit a 3-run homer, this one a line shot to straight away left field. His average is up to .291 for the season and he’s filling in quite capably as the Mets cleanup hitter.

The Mets take the second game of three from the Nationals and go for the sweep tomorrow night behind Johan Santana.

What to watch: Stammen has made one start against the Pirates this season and went 6.1 innings giving up 4 runs. Hernandez has been up and down but was excellent in his last start in LA. Fernando Martinez makes his season debut for the Mets tonight as well.

Mets Reyes, Church To Disabled List

Jose ReyesThe Mets made a flurry of roster moves today that started by adding Jose Reyes and Ryan Church to the 15-day disabled list. Top prospect Fernando Martinez was called up to replace Church.

The Mets completed a trade with the Indians to address their shortstop issues. No. They didn’t get Mark DeRosa. They got Wilson Valdez for cash. Valdez is a 31 year old utility player that’s known as a slick fielder that can’t hit. He’s a .211 lifetime hitter that last played in the majors in 2007 with the Dodgers. He’s only played portions of 3 major league seasons. The word is that he’ll be added to the 25 man roster immediately.

Martinez will be in right field tonight. Don’t miss the fact that he’s playing against the Nationals, Marlins, and Pirates. Those are three teams that would desperately like to acquire top propsects that are major league ready. I’m not saying that he’ll be traded but the Mets might want to leave them with a nice taste of what Martinez can do.

Game Preview: Nationals at Mets [Game 44] May 25, 2009

washington-nationals-logoWashington Nationals (13-30 Road: 6-14) at New York Mets (23-20 Home: 12-8) 7:10 pm

John Lannan (2-3 3.63) vs. John Maine (3-3 4.53)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Nationals come to town after losing 10 of their last 12 games. Ugly. Lannan has pitched really well though. He’s only been rocked twice in his nine starts. Maine is coming off a loss in his last start in LA but had been pitching well prior to that. The Mets could really use some healthy players, especially Jose Reyes and Ryan Church as quickly as possible.

Red Sox 12 – Mets 5 May 24, 2009

Tim Redding was doing pretty well until he lost it completely in the fifth inning. He ended up giving up 6 runs in 4.2 innings. Redding didn’t get any help from the bullpen either. Especially Brian Stokes couldn’t get anyone out. He gave up 5 runs in 1.1 innings. Overall, it was a poorly pitched game by the Mets.

The Mets offense was highlighted by Ramon Castro (2 for 4) who hit a solo homer in the second inning. They put up 5 runs but all of them were within the first five innings of the game.

Francisco Rodriguez was ready to pitch again today after being hospitalized yesterday with severe back spasms. He didn’t get into the game but should be ready for tomorrow night.

The Mets finish the long road trip at 5-5. Not bad for some tough teams and a west coast swing.

Mets K-Rod In Boston Hospital

Francisco RodriguezBefore last night’s game Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez was taken by ambulance to a Boston hospital. According to several media reports, he was running before the game when his back tightened up. He was worked on by a chiropractor in the visitors locker room and the situation became worse.

Several beat reporters wrote that K-Rod collapsed in the locker room and started crying. He was shielded from reporters and an ambulance was called.

J.J. Putz closed out the game against the Red Sox. We haven’t heard what the long-term situation is yet. But it doesn’t look good.

The only good news is that the Mets have Putz, an experienced closer. Unlike last season when Billy Wagner was lost for the season with an elbow injury, the Mets do have some good arms in the bullpen. The season isn’t totally lost because the closer is unavailable for some period of time.
