Mets Jose Reyes Avoids Disabled List

Jose ReyesMets shortstop Jose Reyes flew to Boston with the team last night, then took a flight to New York with head trainer Ray Ramirez according to the team. He had an MRI and saw a doctor today who diagnosed the condition that led him to miss five games as tendinitis behind his right calf.

It looks like Reyes will re-join the team for tomorrow night’s game against the Boston Red Sox and hope for the best. Judging by the fact that the Mets called up Ramon Martinez to replace Alex Cora on the roster, there really isn’t a good alternative in the minors if Reyes does have to go on the disabled list.

Unfortunately, we’ll probably be seeing more of Martinez at short in the Boston series. I’d like to see Fernando Tatis mixed in there just to have some offense out of the position as well.

Mark DeRosa To Mets Trade Talks Confirmed

Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse has confirmation from a team official that the Mets and Cleveland Indians are in talks about sending Mark DeRosa to the Mets. Of course, nothing is official yet and trade talks happen all the time that don’t ever pan out.

The Indians are astonishingly bad this season. The only team in the majors with a worse record is the Washington Nationals. The Indians could dump the rest of DeRosa’s $5.5 million contract at this point. He’s not going to help them anyway. They’re beyond help this season.

DeRosa, born in Passaic, NJ, just turned 34 years-old in February. He easily had the biggest offensive season of his career in 2008 with the Chicago Cubs batting .285/ .376/ .481. He’s a very versitle fielder and played 32 games at shortstop in 2007.

With Jose Reyes facing a good possibility of going on the disabled list and a major question mark at first base, this would be a solid move for the Mets. I have to assume that the Indians would want either Bobbly Parnell or Jonathan Niese plus some lower level prospects. I’d hate to give one of those guys up but that’s the nature of the game.

Dodgers 2 – Mets 1 May 20, 2009

The Dodgers completed the sweep of the Mets tonight and sent New York to their fourth straight loss. You never would’ve thought the game would be 1-1 in the eighth inning of a game that Livan Hernandez and Jeff Weaver started. I thought it would’ve been 8-6 or something like that.

Hernandez pitched really well going 7 innings and giving up 1 run on 93 pitches. I’m shocked that I’m writing that because he appears to be pitching batting practice out there. It’s hard to understand how he doesn’t get shelled in every start. The problem came in the eighth inning with J.J. Putz… again. He gave up 2 walks and 2 hits including 1 run. That was the game.

Once again, the Mets had basically no offense. Carlos Beltran was 2 for 3 with a double but the Mets only had 7 hits in the game.

For those of you that couldn’t stay up to watch the game Daniel Murphy was fantastic at first base. He made all the plays including an unassisted double play. Clearly, he can pick it at first. If they’re trying to find a way to get his bat into the lineup… Consider that problem solved. He had to feel great about that after looking like such a bafoon in the outfield all season.

Jose Reyes left the game after his second at-bat. He was running out a ground out and his right leg injury was aggrevated. He limped off the field and immediately came out of the game. Ramon Martinez played the rest of the game at short. It looks like this injury is more serious than they originally thought.

Former Mets Shoenweis’ Wife Found Dead

schoenweisWe don’t have much information on this at the moment. But Arizona D-Backs pitcher Scott Schoeneweis’ wife Gabrielle was found dead at their home in Arizona today by her 14-year old daughter. She was unresponsive on the floor of the master bedroom.

Schoeneweis was with the team in Florida when he got the news and left the D-Backs for home. Gabrielle Schoeneweis was 39-years old.

This is a shocking story that I’m sure we’ll hear much more about in the near future.

Game Preview: Mets at Dodgers [Game 40] May 20, 2009

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid a sweep in their last game on the west coast before a day off then a series in Boston. Hernandez wasn’t very good in his last start against the Giants giving up 5 runs in 5 innings. He’ll need to do better than that against the Dodgers. Weaver has been working out of the bullpen and making a few starts this season. This is the type of pitcher that the Mets really need to jump on early.
