Mets Delgado Needs Surgery; Out Two Months

Carlos DelgadoBreaking news this afternoon that Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado will have surgery tomorrow to repair a torn labrum and remove a bone spur in his hip. The surgery will keep Delgado away from the team until mid-July. Unfortunately, this is the kind of thing that happens with older players in the last year or two of long term contracts. The Mets were bitten by similar situations with Pedro Martinez.

Delgado will be 37 years old in June and leaves the Mets with somewhat of a hole in the lineup and at first base. I don’t think the Mets will be pursuing a trade before the deadline in July as some of the baseball know-it-all’s have speculated in recent days.

Expect Fernando Tatis, Daniel Murphy, and Jeremy Reed to split time. Murphy can consider this an audition for next season when Delgado certainly will be gone from the Mets. I believe that he’ll have a hard time holding off Tatis for playing time. Tatis has proven that he’s more than capable in the field and has some good power in his bat. The only question is whether his warts will be exposed with increased playing time.

Not to be lost in this story is the foresight of Omar Minaya acquiring Gary Sheffield last month. He’ll have the next two months to prove that he’s still got that old lightning in his bat that the Tigers thought was gone when they released him.

If Delgado doesn’t look like he can make a successful comeback in July the Mets can pull the trigger ona deal before the trading deadline on July 31. Unless the Mets can get something for nothing, there’s no reason to hit the panic button yet.

Game Preview: Mets at Dodgers [Game 38] May 18,2009

dodgers-logoNew York Mets (21-16 Road: 9-8) at Los Angeles Dodgers (26-13 Home: 14-3) 10:10 pm

Tim Redding (0-0 0.00) vs. Randy Wolf (2-1 2.77)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Dodgers have won 4 out of their last 5 games. They’ve been playing well all season even without Manny Ramirez. The Mets are playing some great baseball as well right now. This will be a series of two heavyweights in the National League. Wolf has been pitching surprisingly well and hasn’t lost a game since April 7. Although I’ve never been that impressed with his stuff. Redding pitched very well in two games at Triple-A Buffalo (13 IP, 2.77 ERA, 1.15 WHIP). He makes his season and Mets debut tonight in LA.

Giants 2 – Mets 0 May 17, 2009

This was a strange game mostly due to Mike Pelfrey inexplicably balking three times. And Bob Davidson wasn’t even in the park. Go figure. Both balks led to the 2 San Francisco runs. Pelfrey also gave up an RBI single to Matt Cain. That’s a recipe for a bad night.

The Mets offense was pretty much non-existant other than the 7 walks that Cain gave them. They only had 5 hits in the game and left 9 runners on base. Alex Cora left the game after injuring his thumb on a head first slide into second base. Fernando Tatis took over as Jose Reyes missed his fourth straight game with possible tendinitis in his knee.

The Mets did get the bases loaded twice but hit into double plays both times to kill the rally.

The Mets end up taking 3 of 4 from the Giants which is great for the start of a west coast road trip. It would’ve been nice to get the sweep but it’s a good start anyway. The Mets will be in Los Angeles tomorrow night for the start of a three game series.

Mike Pelfrey (4-0 4.89) vs. Matt Cain (3-1 3.00)

TV: ESPN  RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets are trying to complete the 4-game sweep in San Francisco tonight behind Pelfrey. The Mets offense has been red hot this week. Pelfrey has put together a string of four good starts in a row after some early season struggles. Cain has been up and down this season but hasn’t let any teams really get away from him during his starts.
