Phillies Moyer Shuts Down Mets in 6-2 Win

Jamie Moyer was terrific and Pedro Martinez was utterly hittable. That’s the story of the Mets loss in the opener of a split double header.

The Mets managed to put two runs on the board after Moyers left the game. But it was too little too late.

Martinez was hit hard giving up six runs over four innings on seven hits. The bullpen worked the final five innings perfectly but Pedro had already lost the game early on.

The Mets lead in the NL East is down to one game with another one with the Phillies tonight on ESPN.

Mets Drop First Game To Phillies 3-0

The Mets pitching was good, but the Phillies pitching was better. Brett Myers was the star of the show throwing eight shutout innings for the Phils.

Mike Pelfrey went seven inning giving up three runs (two earned). The Mets bullpen was perfect over the final two innings as well.

The only semblance of offense the Mets got was from Daniel Murphy going 2 for 4 with 2 doubles.

The Mets lead is back to 2 games over the Phils and the magic number is 20.

Mets Win In 10 Over Brewers 6-5

Jon Niese was shaky and assuredly nervous in his first start for the Mets. That’s to be expected. He got hit pretty hard including Rickie Weeks hitting a lead off home run. Niese only lasted into the fourth inning and gave up five runs.

Carlos Beltran had a great offensive game going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI’s and his 22nd home run. The Brewers defense was really bad including two errors that allowed Daniel Murphy to make it to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Reyes in the tenth. He would score the winning run on a sac fly by Endy Chavez.

The bullpen held up really well tonight throwing seven scoreless innings. That was great to see.

Delgado HR Lifts Mets Over Brewers 4-2

Eric Gagne blew another game for the Brewers by giving up three runs in the eighth including a two-run homer to Carlos Delgado. The resurgent Delgado went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Carlos Beltran, Daniel Murphy, and Jose Reyes also had two hits each today.

Beltran left the game in the ninth inning after sliding into home safely and running into home plate umpire Ed Rapuano. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. But it didn’t look like a serious injury.

Mets pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts today including 10 by starter Johan Santana. He went six innings giving up two runs including one on a balk with Prince Fielder on third base.

It was an unusual game for the Mets: scoring big runs late in the game, and the bullpen working through three innings cleanly.

Pedro Gets Win as Mets Top Marlins 6-2

The Mets got a good start from Pedro and three home runs off Scott Olsen for the win today. The Mets take the series from the fish and are guaranteed to stay in first place for another day.

Pedro went 6 innings giving up two runs, both in the first inning. He seems to give up so many runs in the first inning that I’m surprised we haven’t heard any talk about changing his warm up routine. It’s tough to start every game that Pedro pitches losing after the first inning.

The bullpen was okay today as we collectively held our breath from the seventh inning on. Brian Stokes did the closing today and gave up two hits in the inning. But he was bailed out by Jose Reyes snaring a sharp line drive to end the game.

Nick Evans got his first big league homer, going back to back with David Wright in the third inning. Wright was on the ball today going 3 for 5.

The Phillies are still playing in Chicago now so the lead is 1.5 games at the time of this post.

Mets Bullpen Fails Again; Marlins Win 4-3

Aaron Heilman blew up again in the ninth inning. He led off the inning by walking Hanley Ramirez, who went to second on a sacrifice, and went to third on a wild pitch. Cantu and Jacobs were intentionally walked, and Josh Willingham was given a walk-off walk on an inside pitch on 3-1. It was another miserable failure late in the game.

The good news is that Mike Pelfrey had another very good start, going 6.2 innings and giving up 2 runs. He ran out of gas in the sixth and seventh innings though. But that could be expected coming off two consecutive complete games late in the season.

Duaner Sanchez gave up a game tying homer to Jacobs in the eighth. He really looks like he has nothing anymore. The shoulder injuries have completely robbed him of his velocity and effectiveness.

As usual, all of the Mets offense came in the first three innings on a David Wright two-run homer in the first and a Luis Castillo RBI single in the third.

The Mets lead is down to one game with a Phillies win in Chicago.
