Delgado 2 HR’s Powers Mets Over Phillies 6-3

Carlos Delgado went on a tear in the second game of the double header against the Phillies. He ripped Cole Hamels for two homers and four RBI’s.

Johan Santana did his usual 7.1 innings and allowing two runs. He’s a machine at producing very good starts. It’s amazing how consistent he is.

Luis Ayala allowed a run in the ninth but it wasn’t enough for the Phillies to mount a comeback. Ayala is going to be a “cross your fingers” closer possibly for the rest of the season. That’s not a good feeling.

Billy Wagner Suffers Setback During Workout

Injured Mets closer Billy Wagner suffered another setback in his comeback bid from elbow inflammation. GM Omar Minaya told reporters before tonight’s game that Wagner cut his workout short to only 12 pitches after feeling discomfort in his pitching elbow.

At this late stage of the season the Mets need to start thinking that they may not have Wagner back at all. I’m certainly not looking forward to seeing Luis Ayala closing games at the end of September and beyond. But that’s the reality starting to sink into my mind.

Phillies Moyer Shuts Down Mets in 6-2 Win

Jamie Moyer was terrific and Pedro Martinez was utterly hittable. That’s the story of the Mets loss in the opener of a split double header.

The Mets managed to put two runs on the board after Moyers left the game. But it was too little too late.

Martinez was hit hard giving up six runs over four innings on seven hits. The bullpen worked the final five innings perfectly but Pedro had already lost the game early on.

The Mets lead in the NL East is down to one game with another one with the Phillies tonight on ESPN.
