Mets Swept, Drop Doubleheader to Rockies

In a frightening twist to the early season, the Mets were swept at home by the Rockies including the rare feat of being swept at home in a doubleheader. They’ve now lost five straight games and eight of nine. It’s some of the worst baseball I’ve seen in years and that’s saying something for the Mets.

R.A. Dickey got roughed up for 5 runs in 5.1 innings in the first game, a 6-5 loss. And Chris Capuano was rocked for 7 runs in 5.2 innings in the second game today. None of the Mets pitchers could get Troy Tulowitzki out. He was a one-man wrecking ball hitting homers in all four games.

I can’t even go into greater detail about this series without making myself feel sick. It’s only April and it feels like the season is over, that there’s nothing to look forward to this summer. If I go into detail about the Mets sloppy outfield play letting balls drop in front (or behind) them it will drive me crazy.

Terry Collins had a closed door meeting to chew out the players after their Wed. night loss. He obviously played that card too early. It didn’t do any good as they went out and got destroyed in a doubleheader today. It’s just ugly right now.

Colorado Rockies (8-2) at New York Mets (4-7)  12:10pm

Jorge De La Rosa (1-0 1.74) vs. R.A. Dickey (1-1 2.45)

Greg Reynolds (0-0 3.00) vs. Chris Capuano (1-0 6.75)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: We’ve got a single admission doubleheader this afternoon. You don’t get many of those anymore. So enjoy if you have tickets for the game today.

The first game is the premier pitching matchup of the series. De La Rosa pitched two pretty good games so far but hasn’t gotten deeper than 5. 1 IP yet. Dickey had a rough start against the Nationals when he broke a nail during the game but appears to be 100% for today’s game.

Reynolds made one decent start against the Pirates going 6 IP and allowing 2 runs. Capuano made one start against the Nationals and wasn’t that good but got a win. He went 6 IP and allowed 4 runs.

The Mets need to dig out of a hole here down 2-0 in the series after losing a home series to the Nationals. The season could get really ugly today or get back on track if the Mets can sweep the doubleheader.

The Mets lost their third straight game and their sixth of seven. It’s a really ugly start to the season losing at home like this. Jon Niese didn’t do anything to help his poor ERA tonight going 6 IP and allowing 5 runs. He was in pretty good shape until Troy Tulowitzki hit a 3-run homer in the fifth inning. He’s been hitting the cover off the ball so far in this series.

The Mets had 2-0 lead going into the fourth inning but a Todd Helton RBI single and Tulo’s homer in the fifth ended up sealing the game for the Rockies. The Mets offense put up 9 hits and 4 walks so there were plenty of chances to score. Angel Pagan and Carlos Beltran had 2 hits apiece but the Mets left 9 runners on base, not taking advantage of the chances they had.

The Rockies and Mets play a single admission doubleheader tomorrow.

Colorado Rockies (7-2) at New York Mets (4-6)  7:10pm

Esmil Rogers (1-0 1.23) vs. Jon Niese (0-1 6.55)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Here’s a re-boot of last night’s rain out. The Mets will try to avoid their fourth straight loss tonight to the Rockies at home. Niese got crushed in Philly in his last start going 4 IP and allowing 6 runs. He’ll need to do a lot better than that tonight for the Mets to get a win.

Rogers made one excellent start this season in Pittsburgh going 7.1 IP and allowing only 1 run. He’s only made two relief appearances against the Mets in his career throwing 3 IP and allowing 1 run. Tonight will be only his 11th career start for the 25 year old righty.

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 08: Bobby Parnell #39 of...

The Mets lost their third consecutive game to the Rockies tonight. Mike Pelfrey pitched poorly but not as poorly as his two prior starts. Pelf reduced his ERA to 10.80 by throwing 5.1 IP and allowing 4 runs (3 earned). He gave up 6 hits and 4 walks in the game. Way too many baserunners to be successful.

Despite Pelf’s start, the Mets had a tie game going into the 8th inning. They were stringing together hits to score. They had 10 hits and 1 walk as a team with 2 RBI’s apiece by David Wright and Willie Harris.

Bobby Parnell blew up in the 8th inning throwing a wild pitch, making an error on a throw to home, and allowing a 2-run homer to Troy Tulowitzki. It was a complete disaster of an inning and Parnell was boo’d off the mound after the inning. His ERA is an awful 8.31 now and he just can’t get it done in the 8th (or any other) inning right now.

Colorado Rockies (6-2) at New York Mets (4-5)  7:10pm

Jason Hammel (1-0 7.20) vs. Mike Pelfrey (0-1 15.63)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Rockies come to town for a four game series after taking three of four in Pittsburgh. They’re playing some good baseball after signing CarGo and Troy Tulowitzki to big contracts this offseason. Hammel’s first start against the Dodgers wasn’t very good (5 IP, 4 runs) but he did get a win.

Pelfrey has been struggling badly in his first two starts. He needs to turn things around quickly or the Mets will be in trouble with Johan Santana out until mid-season. The Mets have lost four of their last five games and need a win and a good start from Pelfrey tonight badly.
