Mets 7- Marlins 1 April 27, 2009
The Mets got a good start by John Maine. Actually, it was an excellent start. He went 6 innings only giving up one unearned run on one hit. Another great sign for Maine is that he only threw 94 pitches over six innings. That’s usually one of his big problems, throwing too many pitches to go deep into games.
On offense David Wright was 2 for 4 with a triple, 2 runs, and 1 RBI. It’s nice to see him get something going with the bat. Daniel Murphy had a pinch hit triple. But the star of the game was Omir Santos who seems like he might be losing his status as the back up catcher and moving toward starting. He hit a grand slam off Anibal Sanchez in the first inning, complete with a curtain call from the crowd.
On defense Gary Sheffield got the start in left field and immediately dropped an easy fly ball. You would’ve thought it was Murphy out there if Sheff had spun around and fell down while he was dropping the ball. Carlos Delgado didn’t play after experiencing some pain in his hip when he hit a triple against the Nationals yesterday. Fernando Tatis started at first base. Also, Luis Castillo left the game after having some back spasms while running out a ground ball for a hit.
The Marlins lose their seventh straight game and the Mets go to 9-10 on the season.
Game Preview: Marlins at Mets [Game 19] April 27, 2009
Florida Marlins (11-7 Road: 6-3) at New York Mets (8-10 Home: 5-4) 7:10 pm
Anibal Sanchez (1-1 2.50) vs. John Maine (0-2 7.47)
TV: SNY Radio: WFAN
What to watch: The Marlins come to town riding a six game losing streak. Sanchez is a good pitcher who just turned 25 years old. His last start was a 7 inning, 3 earned run loss to the Pirates. The Mets would kill for a game like that from Maine. He’s been knocked around badly in his last two starts by the Cardinals and Padres. He’s another one of the Mets starters that needs to get it going or face the possibility of working out of the bullpen.

Marlins End Mets Season Again With 4-2 Win
It’s hard to believe that this team couldn’t generate any juice from Johan Santana’s performance yesterday. But the Mets just couldn’t get any offense going after scoring two runs in the sixth inning.
Oliver Perez did a decent job giving up only two runs over 5.1 innings. The killer was Scott Schoenweiss and Luis Ayala giving up back to back homers to Helms and Uggla in the eighth inning. That capped the win for the Marlins.
Shea Stadium goes out sadly with the Milwaukee Brewers sealing the Wild Card spot with a win today.
On Deck- September 28- Marlins at Mets [Game 3]
Florida Marlins (83-77 Road: 38-41) at New York Mets (89-72 Home: 48-32) 1:10pm
Scott Olsen (8-11 4.23) vs. Oliver Perez (10-7 4.25)
What to watch: The Mets and Brewers are tied for the Wild Card on the last day of the season. Both teams will be scoreboard watching as the Brewers and Cubs begin play at 2:05 today. Perez got hit pretty hard in his last start against the Cubs. Hopefully, he was inspired by the effort that Johan Santana put forth yesterday. Perez is going on three days rest today.

Santana The Great Leads Mets To Shutout Over Marlins 2-0
The Mets didn’t get much offense today mustering only six hits and two runs. But that turned out to be enough because Johan Santana was on the hill.
I was lucky enough to be at the game today with terrific seats. I went with Rich, Greg, and Jim from the band Scratch. Clearly, there was some good karma from us being there. And the house was rocking for the last weekend of regular season games at Shea Stadium ever.
Santana sliced through the Marlins lineup like a Ginsu knife, throwing a complete game 3-hit shutout. All of this on the heels of three days rest and a 125 pitch effort in his last start, more than he’s ever thrown as a professional. The fans were chanting his name throughout the game and into the afternoon as we joyfully walked down the ramps of Shea exiting the stadium, many of us for what could be the final time.
Santana just became a modern folk hero in Flushing. The Venezuelan native proved he has what it takes to succeed in big market, high pressure situations. Now he’s a Met…
The NL East title is out of reach but the Mets control their own destiny for the Wild Card as the Brewers lost to the Cubs this afternoon. The entire season is in the hands of Oliver Perez tomorrow.
