Tim Redding (1-3 6.35) vs. Paul Maholm (5-4 4.35)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets have a one-game stop in Pittsburgh for a make up game before they head to Philly. The Pirates have won two of their last three series’, so don’t take them too lightly. Maholm is really inconsistent and got ripped by the Mets for 7 runs in 5 innings on May 9 at Citi Field. The Mets have lost three of the last four games that Redding started. With Oliver Perez and John Maine coming off the disabled list this month likely, Redding needs to pick up his game to stay in the rotation.

Pirates 11 – Mets 6 June 4, 2009

The Pirates completed the sweep of the Mets returning the favor for the Mets sweep at Citi Field. Mike Pelfrey was absolutely awful with the worst performance by a Mets starter in two years. He went 3.2 innings giving up 9 runs (8 earned from a Daniel Murphy error). Pelfrey walked 4 and gave up 9 hits, just an abysmal job.

The Mets offense was pretty good putting up 6 runs, which is normally enough to win a game. Carlos Beltran back from the flu had 2 hits, a double and a home run. David Wright also had 2 hits after his second prolonged slump of the early season. Fernando Martinez had 2 hits as well with Ryan Church looming to come off the disabled list on Sunday. Martinez is trying to make a case to stay in the big leagues.

After the game Beltran told reporters that he is embarrassed by the Mets display in Pittsburgh in the three game series. He didn’t call anyone out in particular, which is good, but someone had to say something after this kind of disaster.

Pre-Game: Mets at Pirates [Game 52] June 4, 2009

New York Mets (28-23 Road: 11-14) at Pittsburgh Pirates (24-28 Home: 14-11) 12:35 pm

Mike Pelfrey (4-1 3.88) vs. Ross Ohlendorf (5-5 4.45)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to salvage something out of this rain-shortened series in Pittsburgh behind Pelfrey. He’s pitched five good starts in a row and should be able to keep it going against a weak Pirates lineup. Their lineup is even weaker after trading OF Nate McClouth to the Braves yesterday. Ohlendorf has lost his last two starts and given up at least four runs in his last three starts. The word is that Carlos Beltran is finally ready to play.

WFAN radio is reporting that the Mets-Pirates game tonight is rained out in Pittsburgh. The teams are scheduled to play tomorrow at 12:35pm so it would make sense to play a double header tomorrow.

The injured Mets could really use an extra day off though right now. So they’re probably trying to work out a date when they can get back to Pittsburgh for a game later this season. So Mike Pelfrey will be moved back to tomorrow’s game as things stand right now.
