Ryan Church- Good News On Head Injury

Mets outfielder Ryan Church got some good news after visiting the Cleveland Clinic this week for examinations. He’s on the disabled list again after suffering headaches and dizziness. There’s been some question as to whether the symptoms are due to post concussion syndrome or migraines.

The doctors at the Cleveland Clinic determined that migraines are the cause of his symptoms and have put him on a program of exercise and stretching for his neck to relieve the pain he’s experiencing.

That’s great news for Church and the Mets. The Mets need him now more than ever with Moises Alou gone for the season with a hamstring tear.

Mets Outfield Options- Matt Holliday, Barry Bonds And More

Before yesterday afternoon, I thought that the Mets would hold tight until after the All-Star break to see if Moises Alou could make it back onto the active roster. Well, we got the news today that Alou is likely gone for the season with a torn hamstring.

Ryan Church is on the disabled list for the second time with post concussion symptoms. It’s the fourth time this season that he’s been on the DL due to two concussions since March. We really don’t know what his long term situation is. Mike Matheny and Corey Koskie both retired within the last two seasons due to concussion related problems. It’s a dicey scenario for Church.

Now I’ve come to the conclusion that the Mets need to put together a short list of outfielders to go after. I love the way Endy Chavez and Fernando Tatis have performed this season. Don’t get me wrong. But I think that both of them are best seen in small doses.

I’m not in favor of rushing a prospect to the majors either. Everyone wants to see what Fernando Martinez can do, including me. But rushing guys to the bigs can be a recipe for failure. The Mets are built to win now, stocked with veterans that aren’t here to play for the future.

So I’ve worked on my list of outfielders that the Mets need to start looking into prior to the July 31st non-waiver trading deadline. Here’s the list:

Players Union To Request Concussion Inquiry

The post concussion syndrome that landed Mets outfielder Ryan Church on the disabled list again has spurred the MLBPA to request treatment guidelines from Major League Baseball. There are several players that has been affected by concussions or even had their careers cut short including Mike Matheny and Corey Koskie.

Alan Schwartz of the NY Times reports this morning that the Players Association is questioning whether Church was treated properly my Mets medical personnel.

There’s been so much speculation about Church’s treatment this season. And rightfully so. The Times article even brings up the possibility that Church could be able to sue the Mets medical staff if it’s determined that he wasn’t treated optimally for his concussion and/or post concussion symptoms.

Mets Roster Moves July 7- Church To DL, Evans Called Up

Mets outfielder Ryan Church is going back on the disabled list for the second time due to post concussion symptoms. Nick Evans is being called up from Double-A Binghamton to replace him on the roster.

Church left the team in Philadelphia to be examined for what was termed as a migraine. Apparently, that wasn’t the case or the team is being cautious this time.

The Mets caught lightning in a bottle with Evans the last time he was called up. He hit three doubles in his Major League debut in Colorado. But his success was short lived as he appeared over matched by big league pitchers.

Video: Ryan Church Explains Migraine Problems

This video is from the post game on Saturday when Ryan Church left the game against the Phillies after three at-bats with dizziness. I’m not so sure that I buy the migraine explanation after Church has had two concussions this season. I think there may be more to it than that. The video from SNY isn’t that great. There’s way too much camera time for the fat guy behind Church in the locker room, but listen to what he has to say anyway.

Mets’ Church Unavailable Today

Ryan Church left last night’s game in Philadelphia complaining of dizziness. The Mets team doctors spoke to Church and feel that it’s a migraine situation not a recurrance of the post concussion syndrome. He missed two weeks on the disabled list last month due to concussion-related problems.

Church won’t play today against the Phillies in the third game of the four game series. He’s played so well this season for the Mets that it would be a real shame for him and the team if this was an ongoing problem.
