NYC Gives Up Citi Field Luxury Box

Mayor Bloomberg’s administration had negotiated a deal to have luxury boxes at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field during the financing deal for the new stadiums. After criticism emerged about the deals and with Bloomberg facing re-election, the City has given up the boxes.

It’s hard to understand how a government entity would even justify paying for luxury boxes. My understanding is that they go for mid- six figures.

If the City wanted to put a positive spin on purchasing luxury boxes what they should have done was donated the boxes to less fortunate families that live in the Queens and the Bronx who can never afford to sit in them or purchase regular seats for that matter. They could have given the boxes to a different family for every home game.


    1. Good point Kerel. I read a couple of years ago that Beltran gets a luxury box as part of his contract. His wife prefers to sit near the field when she goes to games, so he donates the box to underprivileged kids from the city to use.
