Nationals 8- Mets 1 April 26, 2009

42609Oliver Perez couldn’t get out of the fifth inning…again. And he gave up 7 earned runs. I liked Perez a lot more when half of his starts were pretty good. His season ERA is up to 9.31 now. What more is there to say about his start?

The Mets offense only mustered six hits. But the Nationals rookie pitcher Jordan Zimmermann looks like he’s going to be a good one. I have to say that it’s good to see that the Nationals have something going for them. I was starting to think that they don’t belong in Major League Baseball.

The Mets couldn’t finish the sweep thanks to another stinker by Perez. The Marlins come to town starting tomorrow night.

Game Preview: Nationals at Mets [Game 18] April 26, 2009

Washington Nationals logoWashington Nationals (3-13 Road: 0-8) at New York Mets (8-9 Home: 5-3)  1:10 pm

Jordan Zimmerman (1-0 3.00) vs. Oliver Perez (1-1 7.80)

TV: WPIX   RadioWFAN

What to watch: Zimmerman looks like a bright spot for an otherwise dreadful Nationals team. He made one start against the Braves and got a rare win for the Nats. The Mets have lost 2 of 3 Perez starts. I believe if he gets bombed again today that the Mets may skip his next start so he can try to figure out what his problem(s) are.

Mets Sign Figueroa, Lamb

Mike LambNelson Figueroa re-signed with the Mets on a minor league deal after refusing a minor league assignment ealier this week. His free agency period was short lived so I assume that he couldn’t find anything other than a minor league deal.

Mike Lamb also signed a minor league deal with the Mets today. He’s primarily a third baseman and was cut by the Brewers after spring training. I doubt that we’ll see him in the majors this season unless there’s an injury. He’s probably filling a need at Triple-A Buffalo.

Mets 8- Nationals 2 April 25, 2009

42509Mike Pelfrey had a pretty good game returning from forearm tendinitis and a missed start. He went 5.2 innings giving up 2 runs. What I didn’t like about his start was the 3 walks and 1 strikeout. But he did have almost all groundball outs which is signature Pelfrey. So it was a bit of a mixed bag in this start.

The Nationals are horrible defensively. They had 3 errors today after looking bad in the field last night as well. This team really needs a complete makeover. What a disaster.

Carlos Beltran kept up his hot hitting today going 3 for 5 and upping his season average to .415. Ryan Church was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s.

Game Preview: Nationals at Mets [Game 17] April 25, 2009

Washington Nationals logoWashington Nationals (3-12 Road: 0-7) at New York Mets (7-9 Home: 4-3)  1:10 pm

Daniel Cabrera (0-1 4.50) vs. Mike Pelfrey (1-0 8.10)

TV: SNY   RadioWFAN

What to watch: Pelfrey is making his first start in 12 days after missing a turn in the rotation because of forearm tendinitis. He says that he feels fine and is ready to go. Cabrera hasn’t pitched terribly for the Nationals but he walks too many hitters (8 walks and 6 strikeouts). He’s one of those curious pitchers that appears to have good stuff but gives up too many walks and gets hit harder than you would think.
