Mets Should Extend David Wright’s Contract

Now that the Madoff lawsuit is behind the Mets and their secret loan to MLB is paid off, it’s time to extend David Wright’s contract and make sure that he’s a Met for his entire career. The Mets paid off their bridge loan last week after the Madoff lawsuit settlement and closed on the sale of 12 shares of the team. So the financial “uncertainty”, as we’ve heard it referred to by the Mets, has been removed. They’ve started to settle their debts but they haven’t paid us back yet. The fans. They owe it to us to keep Wright with the Mets for a long, long time.

The Mets let Jose Reyes walk away for nothing because of that financial “uncertainty”. And they can’t let that happen again to Wright.

Wright deserves a similar extension to the one that Ryan Zimmerman signed with the Nationals last month. The former youth teammates should play with their respective teams for years to come. Zimmerman’s extension added 6 years/$100 million to the two years he already had left on his contract. The Nationals did the right thing with Zimmerman. Mets Have a Real Shot at Last Place

The Mets Could Win the Anti-Pennant Race…

After reading Yahoo Sports this afternoon, I wasn’t surprised to come across an article reporting that the Mets had a real shot at finishing up in last place. To me it seems for the last 4 years they have always had a shot at finishing up in last place. Coming into Spring Training I thought this looked like a last place team and now they may actually be that team.

Will they rise to the occasion this year and stay out of last, giving us hope for the future? Or will they wither from the dog days of summer and end up in last, right where I predicted they would be…?

Only time will tell but the Mets, Nationals, and Marlins are all within 2 games of each other.  So, for the next 6 weeks there’s sort of an anti-pennant race we can all watch. The race to the cellar!

The Mets schedule for the rest of August is brutal. Milwaukee, Phillies, and then Atlanta. Then they’ll finish off with a strange series against the Marlins.

5 Game Series with Florida

The Mets have an interesting 5 game series with Florida coming up the end of this month. They then go on to play the Nationals and Marlins on the road.

They still have series against Atlanta, the Phillies, St. Louis and Cincinnati in September too. These will all be tough series to take. They have 12 games away and 14 games at home. This year home field advantage has not been an advantage at all.

Nationals 3 – Mets 2 July 31, 2011

The Mets lose the series in Washington today and take their second straight loss. Jon Niese had a decent start going 5.1 innings and allowing 2 runs on 8 hits.

The Mets had no offense going until Scott Hairston came in for Lucas Duda in the seventh. He hit a solo homer in his first at-bat, then another solo homer in the ninth to tie the game. That was all of the offense the Mets could muster today.

Bobby Parnell pitched the ninth inning and was a complete mess. He hit a batter and the umpire, was wild as you’ve ever seen him, and gave up the game winning infield single.

The Mets head home to face the Marlins starting tomorrow night.

The Mets five game winning streak came to an end in Washington tonight at the hands of Nats starter Yunesky Maya. Jason Marquis was supposed to start but got traded to the D-Backs right before the game. Maya held the Mets scoreless into the sixth inning and the Nats bullpen continued the shutout.

Obviously, there isn’t much offense from the Mets to talk about. But Josh Thole was 2 for 2 and got hit twice so he was on base four times. And the Mets did manage to load the bases with 2 outs in the ninth inning, but Willie Harris struck out looking to end the game.

The Mets and Nats will play the rubber game tomorrow at 1:35.

The Mets jumped all over Chien-Ming Wang scoring 4 runs in the first inning. They greeted Wang rudely in his first start in more than two years. The offense continued to be in high gear as they had 12 hits and 1 walk. Ronny Paulino had the big game going 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Dillon Gee was solid and made it into the seventh inning allowing only 2 earned runs. Bobby Parnell and Tim Byrdak did their best to give the game back in the eighth inning allowing the sorry Nationals to score 2 late runs. But D.J. Carrasco killed the rally and, once again, Jason Isringhausen shut the door in the ninth.

The Mets swept the two-game series and didn’t allow the offensively challenged Nats to score a run. Dillon Gee took a no-hitter to 5.2 innings and, of course, it was Livan Hernandez who broke it up with a single. The Mets got the final out on a disputed play at first base that appeared to pull Daniel Murphy off the base on a throw by Justin Turner.

Preview: Nationals at Mets May 19, 2011

Washington Nationals (20-22) at New York Mets (20-22) 1:10pm

Livan Hernandez (3-5 3.92) vs. Dillon Gee (2-0 4.44)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are going for the sweep of the short series behind Gee this afternoon if the weather holds out. The Mets have won both games Gee started since he came out of the bullpen to join the rotation. He didn’t pitch particularly well in Houston but got enough run support to avoid a loss. He went 5 innings and gave up 4 runs.

Hernandez had taken a loss in three straight starts coming into today’s game. Although he was a hard luck loser in his last start in Florida going 7 innings and allowing only 1 run. The Nats are 3-6 in games he started this year.
