The biggest story of the 92-loss season turned out to be the behavior and firing of Tony Bernazard as their VP of player development.
Among the accusations against Bernazard were:
- He took his shirt off and challenged the Binghamton Mets to a fight
- He got into an argument with Francisco Rodriguez
- He publicly yelled at a Mets employee when he didn’t get the seat that he wanted at a game
In the strangest firing of all time, Omar Minaya announced the firing last July 27 and then blamed it on Daily News writer Adam Rubin and his jealous desire to work for the Mets. Or something like that. It was difficult to understand exactly what Minaya was implying.
Then Minaya apologized, but not really. Then Jeff Wilpon apologized for Minaya. It was completely bizarre and inept.
Now Ken Rosenthal has an exclusive interview with Bernazard. It’s difficult to infer tone from writing, but Bernazard comes across as defiant and the victim of unjust action.
When asked if the Mets backed him during the firestorm of media attention, Bernazard said:
Let’s go to that point. When people are covering their asses, they don’t do things that are right . . . Did anyone in the Mets’ organization say I did all these things? Did they question my baseball knowledge?
I haven’t said anything about the Mets. It (his situation) can’t change. Some people think I did the wrong thing by not saying anything. Some people said it was the right thing to do.
I know what happened. The kids on the team in Binghamton know what happened. If there are people who misinterpreted what happened there, maybe they didn’t have the job they wanted, weren’t promoted when they thought they should have been promoted.
I’m very dedicated and passionate about what I do. I was punished for trying to be great. I can’t regret that.
The Mets Report 
Many Met players are complaining about the deep fences at citi field—lastsummer opposing teams had good success hitting home runs at city…The winter winds are still blowing in from the northwest so it is naturally tough—when the warm southwest winds start to blow in the next few weeks the configuration of citi field will start to yeild more homers they will come….. these guys have to be patient and just concentrate on good contact…It seems that they are all overswinging and the strikeouts are a result…patience is the soulution…..If it is frustrating that the mets can't hit balls out, …..it's got to be the same for opponents!

I agree with you. But I think that Citi Field has gotten into David Wright's head. He just looks like he's struggling at the plate there. I think he's trying to do too much to compensate for the size of the park.
