Game Preview: Cardinals at Mets [Game 107] August 5, 2009

st_louis_cardinals_logoSt. Louis Cardinals (59-50 Road: 28-27) at New York Mets (50-56 Home: 29-25) 12:10pm

Kyle Lohse (4-6 4.14) vs. Jon Niese (1-1 4.50)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Mets attempt to recover from another devastating loss last night with Niese on the mound early today. He got beat up by the Rockies in his last start for 4 runs over 6.1 innings. It’s likely that the Mets will be without another regular today, Luis Castillo. It looked like his ankle was sprained badly after falling down the dugout steps last night. Lohse hasn’t been terrible for the Cardinals but they have lost the last five games that he started. So there is hope for this downtrodden Mets team.

Game Preview: Cardinals at Mets [Game 106] August 4, 2009

st_louis_cardinals_logoSt. Louis Cardinals (58-50 Road: 27-27) at New York Mets (50-55 Home: 29-24) 7:10pm

Joel Pineiro (9-9 2.84) vs. Johan Santana (12-8 2.96)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Mets and Cardinals start a two-game series tonight at Citi Field. At least Santana is pitching tonight. That’s really the only reason to watch this Mets team right now. Pineiro threw a two-hit complete game shutout against the Mets in New York on June 23. And he went 8 innings giving up 2 runs for a win in St. Louis against them on April 22. He hasn’t given up more than 3 runs in a game since May. Santana pitched a good game in his last start against Colorado going 7 shutout innings and only giving up 4 hits.

Game Preview: D-Backs at Mets [Game 105] August 3, 2009

d-backs logoArizona D-Backs (46-59 Road: 22-26) at New York Mets (50-54 Home: 29-23) 7:10pm

Dan Haren (10-6 2.19) vs. Nelson Figueroa (0-1 4.50)

TV: SNY

What to watch: Figueroa is making a spot start because of the rain forced double header last Thursday. Haren has had a terrific season but he has been vulnerable in his last two starts only going 5 innings in each. Hopefully, that trend will continue or the Mets will be in serious danger of losing three of four games at home to the D-Backs.

Jon Garland (5-10 4.42) vs. Mike Pelfrey (8-6 4.72)

TV: SNY

What to watch: This is the third of a four game series. Garland hasn’t won a game in almost a month but has pitched pretty well. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a start since June 25. Pelfrey is 1-1 in his last two starts but he’s pitched 13.1 innings and allowed only 3 runs.

Max Scherzer (6-6 3.61) vs. Oliver Perez (2-3 7.42)

TV: WPIX

What to watch: Scherzer has been pitching pretty well this season: 111 K’s and only 40 BB’s. He’s been a little inconsistent but not compared to the guy he’s pitching against today. Perez hasn’t won a game since July 8 and hasn’t gone more than 6 innings since coming off the disabled list four starts ago.

Doug Davis (5-10 3.76) vs. Livan Hernandez (7-5 4.87)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The fourth place D-Backs come to town after losing two of three at home to the Phils. The suddenly hot Mets send Hernandez to the mound after two straight good starts. Davis is 1-2 in his last three starts giving up 13 runs in 12.1 innings.

Game Preview: Rockies at Mets [Game 100, 101] July 30, 2009

rockiesColorado Rockies (54-46 Road: 27-25) at New York Mets (48-51 Home: 27-20)

Jason Hammel (5-5 4.28) vs. Johan Santana (11-8 3.12) 12:10pm

Jorge De La Rosa (8-7 4.78) vs. Jon Niese (1-0 4.08) 7:10pm

TV: SNY(both games)

What to watch: We have another dual-admission double header after the rain out last night. The Mets have a chance to sweep the four game series today, which would be huge for this team. Hammel hasn’t pitched badly but he hasn’t won a game in five starts and he generally doesn’t pitch more than 6 innings. Santana is coming off a terrible start in Houston in which he gave up 5 runs and 12 hits in 6.2 innings. De La Rosa has won his last six decisions and hasn’t lost a game since June 16. Niese pitched a great game in Houston after his recall from the minors. It would be terrific if he could follow that up with another good one tonight.
