There isn’t much more to say about this game than… Carlos Beltran!!! He ripped three 2-run homers, two left handed and one right handed. It was quite a display. He has 8 home runs for the season and if he ever had trade value it’s certainly right now.

Jon Niese didn’t have a great start but pitching is tough in Colorado when you rely on a curveball. He gave up 5 runs in 6.1 innings. But he had enough run support to make it work for a win. That kind of start won’t stand up for a win very often though. He definitely owes Beltran dinner for getting that win for him.

The Mets offense was surprisingly light for scoring 9 runs. Other than Beltran, the rest of the team only had 3 hits. They did have 9 walks as a team though. Ubaldo Jimenez didn’t have it at all. He only lasted 3.2 innings and gave up 5 runs on 3 hits and 6 walks. He had no control at all.

The Mets take the series with the win today and dump the Rockies out of first place in the NL West. The Mets are on their way to Houston now to start a weekend series tomorrow night.

Preview: Mets at Rockies May 11, 2011

New York Mets (16-20) at Colorado Rockies (19-15) 3:10pm

Jon Niese (1-4 4.71) vs. Ubaldo Jimenez (0-2 5.88)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets have a chance to win the series this afternoon in Colorado. The weather is supposed to be bad though so it may be tough to get the game in. But they’ll try their best because the Mets aren’t going to be back in Colorado again this year.

The Rockies have lost all five games that Jimenez started this year. His last start was pretty good in San Francisco though. He went 6 innings and only allowed 1 run.

Niese has been pitching well for the past month, not allowing more than 3 runs in a game since April 19. David Wright is scheduled to have a day off today and Ike Davis probably won’t play with a strained calf in last night’s game.

The Mets finally got a win against the Rockies this season after starting 0-5. Mike Pelfrey had a second consecutive solid start and hit a 2-run double in the fourth inning that plated the winning run. He ended up going 6.2 innings and allowing 3 runs to lower his season ERA to 5.74. He still has a way to go to make that ERA respectable but he seems to be on the right track now.

The big news is that Ike Davis was injured on a collision with David Wright. They were going for a pop up in front of the mound. It looked like Davis rolled his ankle but it turns out that he strained his calf. Daniel Murphy moved over to first base and Justin Turner took over at second base.

The Mets and Rockies finish the series, weather permitting, today at 3pm.

New York Mets (15-20) at Colorado Rockies (19-13) 8:40pm

Mike Pelfrey (2-3 6.06) vs. Jason Hammel (3-1 2.63)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets have lost five straight games to the Rockies this year and try to break the trend behind Pelfrey. His last start against the Giants was really good going 7.2 innings and allowing only 2 runs. But the Rockies hit him on April 11th for 3 earned runs over 5.1 innings in a no decision.

The Rockies have won four of the six games that Hammel started this year. He’s only allowed 2 runs in his last three starts over 20.2 innings. He pitched well at Citi Field against Pelfrey on April 11th going 6 innings and allowing 2 earned runs.

The Mets lost to the Rockies for the fifth straight time this year but this time it was in Colorado for a change. Chris Capuano pitched a really nice game going 6.1 innings and allowing only 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks. He got chased in the seventh inning when Chris Iannetta hit a solo homer down the line in left field to give the Rockies the lead.

The Mets had very little offense with only 5 singles and 6 walks in the game. They had plenty of chances but left 10 runners on base. Willie Harris had a check swing single in the ninth to get something going. But he got thrown out stealing with one out that killed any chance of starting a rally.

The Mets and Rockies do it again tomorrow night at 8:40pm.

Preview: Mets at Rockies May 9, 2011

New York Mets (15-19) at Colorado Rockies (18-13) 8:40pm

Chris Capuano (2-3 5.40) vs. Jhoulys Chacin (4-2 2.85)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The first place Rockies just got swept in San Francisco and are 2-7 in their last nine games. They put an absolute beating on the Mets three weeks ago when they swept the Mets at Citi Field in four games. Troy Tulowitzki was unstoppable in that series. The Rockies have won four of the six games Chacin started this season. He won his last start in Arizona going 7 innings and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits.

Capuano pitched well in his last start although the Mets lost to the Giants. He went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs. His starts have been pretty inconsistent this season so it’s tough to predict what we’ll see from him tonight. For his career, he’s 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 4 games at Coors Field.

Video: Mets Weekly Report- Losing, Doubleheaders, Pagan

There was so much to talk about this week. The Rockies and Braves with consecutive doubleheader beatings and the Rox sweeping the Mets at home. The Mets lack of fundamentals. We could go on and on.

Kerel Cooper of On The Black and I get fired up this week about the Mets losing ways. Terry Collins talks a lot about playing the game “the right way”. But it looks like that’s just talk because it isn’t the Mets playing the game the right way. The team has been one of the worst in recent memory at playing a smart game. Mental mistakes have been more frequent than physical errors.

We also talk about some of the worst performing Mets early this season like Angel Pagan and Mike Pelfrey. Check out the video below and post your comments.
