Livan Hernandez (5-5 5.10) vs. J.D. Martin (0-0 0.00)

TV: SNY RadioWFAN

What to watch: Finally, the Mets face a team struggling as badly as they are. The Nats have lost 10 of their last 11. They have a new manager since we last saw them. Manny Acta was fired and Jim Riggleman is running the show now. Hernandez has been rocked in his last two starts allowing 15 runs in 7 innings. Martin is a 26 year-old making his major league debut tonight.

Game Preview: Mets at Braves [Game 91] July 19,2009

braves logoNew York Mets (43-47 Road: 18-27)  at Atlanta Braves (45-46 Home: 23-22) 6:05 pm

Fernando Nieve (3-3 3.03) vs. Javier Vazquez (6-7 2.95)

TV: ESPN RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to get the split of the four games series if they can win tonight. Nieve has lost three straight games now. Although he didn’t pitch badly in his last start giving up 3 runs in 6 innings to the Reds. Vazquez is 2-2 in his last four decisions but he hasn’t given up more than 2 runs in a start since June 17. Don’t forget that it’s a Sunday night game on ESPN but they’re starting at 6:00 because of the ESPY award show.

Game Preview: Mets at Braves [Game 90] July 18, 2009

braves logoNew York Mets (42-47 Road: 17-27)  at Atlanta Braves (45-45 Home: 23-21) 4 :10 pm

Johan Santana (10-7 3.09) vs. Kenshin Kawakami (5-6 4.26)

TV: FOX RadioWFAN

What to watch: As usual, Santana has to stop the bleeding with a great start not a good one. It seems like the Mets have been putting him in this position for a year and a half now. He was lights out against the Reds over 7 innings in his last start. We’ll see if he can do it again today. Gary Sheffield is out after leaving the game with leg cramps last night. He may be able to pinch hit today. Kawakami has been pitching well and hasn’t lost a decision since May 27. So this won’t be an easy task today.

Game Preview: Mets at Braves [Game 89] July 17, 2009

braves logoNew York Mets (42-46 Road: 17-26)  at Atlanta Braves (44-45 Home: 22-21) 7:35 pm

Mike Pelfrey (7-4 4.47) vs. Jair Jurrjens (7-7 2.91)

TV: WPIX RadioWFAN

What to watch: Pelfrey’s last start against the Reds was very good going 7 innings and giving up 3 runs. But he’s been up and down going 2-2 in his last four starts. Jurrjens is a tough luck 2-2 in his last four starts as well. But he only gave up 9 runs over 27 innings in those games. The Braves will retire Greg Maddux‘ number 31 prior to the game. At least the Braves show some respect to their great former players. I hope the Mets front office is watching the ceremony. They could learn something about how to run a top-flight franchise.

Game Preview: Mets at Braves [Game 88] July 16, 2009

braves logoNew York Mets (42-45 Road: 17-25)  at Atlanta Braves (43-45 Home: 21-21) 7:10 pm

Oliver Perez (2-2 8.78) vs. Derek Lowe (8-7 4.39)

TV: SNY RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Braves come out of the All-Star break after going 4-3 in their last two series’ against the Cubs and Rockies. Lowe hasn’t been pitching that well, going 1-4 in his last five decisions. Perez had a decent comeback game from “injury” against the Dodgers pitching 5 innings and giving up 2 runs. Perez is 6-4 with a 3.46 ERA in 14 career starts against Atlanta. It’ll be interesting to see how Jeff Francoeur and Ryan Church perform against their former teams in this series. I have the feeling that both will want to put on a show.

Game Preview: Reds at Mets [Game 87] July 12, 2009

RedsCincinnati Reds (42-44 Road: 22-24) at New York Mets (41-45 Home: 24-20)  1:10 pm

Aaron Harang (5-8 3.89) vs. Mike Pelfrey (6-4 4.52)

TV: SNY RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Reds play the rubber game of the series this afternoon at Citi Field. It’s also the last game before the All-Star break for both teams. Harang hasn’t won a decision since May 25, if you can believe that! Pelfrey has been extremely inconsistent this season. He needs to figure out how to put together a decent game every five days. The Mets can’t have him getting blown up in every other start.

TV: WPIX  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: Cueto got rocked by the Phillies in his last start for 9 runs in .2 innings. He’s been up and down over the last month. Santana has lost four of his last five decisions. Look for Jeff Francoeur to make his Mets debut in right field tonight.
