Mets Redding Has Shoulder Pain

Tim ReddingTim Redding had offseason surgery to repair a stress fracture in the second toe of his left foot in November. So he didn’t do his normal offseason throwing program. Today he reported to the team that he’s feeling some pain in his throwing shoulder. Apparently, Redding feels that its due to rushing his throwing program this spring.

This certainly won’t help in his bid to win the #5 starter spot from Freddy Garcia and Jon Niese. But it’s still too early in the spring to make any decisions. The Mets could live with Redding getting a late start to the season if it came to that. In my mind, he’s likely going to be the long man in the bullpen anyway.

Mets Fernando Martinez Injured In Carribean Series

Top prospect Fernando Martinez strained his elbow playing in the Carribean Series this week. He flew back to New York to be examined by Mets doctors and was told to resto for three weeks. He’ll miss the first week of full squad workouts.

The 20-year old is the Mets top prospect and I suspect will see time in the majors in left field at some point this season. The injury doesn’t appear to be serious at this point. No reason to worry Mets fans.

Mets Maine Positive After Shoulder Surgery

John Maine had a bone spur removed from his right shoulder this week successfully. He spoke to the media about the surgery:

“I feel great. I feel like I want to start throwing now,” Maine said. “That’s what I wanted to hear. So now I can be ready.”

Maine can start throwing again in December and expects to be ready for spring training. Good news for the Mets. He’s got a bright future ahead of him, and the Mets will be counting on him more than ever in 2009. With Oliver Perez and Pedro Martinez  becoming free agents, the Mets really need Maine to step up his game.

Mets Santana Has Knee Surgery

Today Johan Santana got his knee scoped for torn cartilage. Apparently, it was the result of normal wear and tear not an injury that occurred during the season. He knew that his knee was bothering him during the last month of the season but told team trainers that he didn’t want to know how bad it was. The word is that he told the Mets training staff that the only way he wasn’t finishing out the season was if he went to the hospital in an ambulance.

The Mets picked the right guy to give a monster contract to: a great player and no excuses.

Mets John Maine Has Shoulder Surgery

The Mets put out a press release that John Maine underwent successful shoulder surgery to remove a lesion from the back of his right shoulder. Maine is expected to make a full recovery and be ready in time for spring training.

Great news for the Mets here. Maine is one of the most valuable players the Mets have because of his talent, age, and the amount of time he’s under the Mets control before free agency.

One of the things I liked the most about Jerry Manuel was his reluctance to use Maine at the end of the season, even when the bullpen couldn’t get anyone out. It would’ve been a shame if Manuel used Maine and he ended up hurting his career because of it. You can’t fool around with a young pitcher having shoulder problems. That showed real class by Manuel to potentially sacrifice his job security to do what’s best for Maine’s career and the Mets long term plans.

Billy Wagner- A Met No More?

Multiple media reports say that Billy Wagner has been informed by the Mets that they won’t pick up his option for the 2010 season. Since he’s out for the remainder of this year and probably all of next year, he’s likely played his last game as a Met.

Scott Schoenweiss told reporters that he visited Wagner this week to check in on him after his Tommy John surgery. Schoenweiss said that Wagner still wants to pitch and close, but it likely won’t be with the Mets.

Mets Roster Moves- Maine To DL; Castillo Activated

The Mets decided to go ahead and put John Maine on the disabled list because of the bone spurs in the back of his right shoulder. He hasn’t been the same pitcher over the last month and a half at all. There’s been some talk from Jerry Manuel that Maine’s season may be over, from NY Post:

“I think if we do rest him, I would think it would be a complete shutdown,” Manuel said in today’s Post. “I have to take in everything and make a decision because we want to do what’s best for John Maine, we want to do what’s best for the team. We’re in a pennant race.”

Maine to the disabled list eliminated any questions about who would go off the active roster when Luis Castillo came back. He’s in the starting lineup tonight against the Astros after not playing since July 2 because of a hip flexor injury. Now the Mets have three second basemen on the team and continue their curious roster decisions. For much of the season they’ve been carrying three catchers.
