Randy Wolf (3-3 3.49) vs. Livan Hernandez (5-4 4.56)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Dodgers play the rubber game of the series tonight. In Wolf’s last five starts, he’s only allowed more than 2 runs once. Hernandez got bombed in his last start in Philly for 7 runs in 3 innings. The Mets offense finally woke up last night. We’ll see if they can do it again tonight.

Mets 5 – Dodgers 4 July 8, 2009

I know it’s hard to believe, but the Mets actually looked like a Major League team tonight. And Oliver Perez got a win! I could barely believe my eyes. Perez went 5 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and 7 walks. He surely wasn’t great with way too many walks and of 104 pitches, 52 were balls and 52 were strikes. Not good. But it was enough to get the win tonight.

The Mets on offense had 9 hits and 3 walks. The hits were scattered throughout the lineup which was great to see. Even ice cold David Wright was 2 for 4.

The game also featured a highlight play at first base by Daniel Murphy. A ground ball hit the base and bounced away from him, he picked it up and had a back-hand throw to Bobby Parnell to get the runner. It was an amazing play. You’ll definitely see that one on ESPN tonight.

Francisco Rodriguez had a rocky ninth inning but got the save. He gave up a solo homer to Manny Ramirez, then a walk and hit. But he got out of it with a double play.

Hiroki Kuroda (3-4 3.91) vs. Oliver Perez (1-2 9.97)

TV: SNY, ESPN  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid their fifth consecutive loss tonight. Perez is back from the DL/poor performance. He pitched okay in the minors in his rehab games. But who knows what to expect from him, really? The Dodgers are 4-4 in Kuroda’s start this year. He’s only pitched more than 6 innings twice in eight starts. Expect to be into the Dodgers bullpen during this one if the Mets can generate any offense for a change.

Former Met Dykstra Files For Bankruptcy

According to ESPN, Lenny Dykstra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. His filing listed no more than $50,000 in assets and between $10 and $50 million in liabilities. He’s also facing approximately 20 lawsuits regarding his activities as a financial entrepreneur and his magazine, The Players Club.

Dykstra retired in 1996 after winning the World Series with the Mets in 1986 and losing the World Series with the Phillies in 1993. He’s the first player that I can remember seeing get huge in one offseason and thinking that it couldn’t be natural. He was named in the Mitchell Report based on information from Kirk Radomski that Dykstra used performance enhancing drugs during his career.

I’ve seen television interviews with Nails recently regarding his various business ventures. It was sad to see him coming across like he was selling snake oil. While I was watching, I was thinking that it would hard to imagine anyone trusting him with any amount of money.

Dodgers 8 – Mets 0 July 7, 2009

The Mets lost their fourth consecutive game and were shutout for the second consecutive game. The team hasn’t been this low and lifeless in quite some time. Mike Pelfrey was terrible after having an excellent start in Milwaukee last week. He gave up 5 runs (4 earned) in 3+ innings and that killed the Mets. It took him 95 pitches to get through 3 innings. Talk about struggling on the mound! In all, the Mets gave up 13 hits and 7 walks to the Dodgers. The Dodgers had 5 two-out RBI’s in the game.

The Mets have absolutely nothing going on offense right now. They only had 4 hits and 2 walks.

The only interesting part of the game was Manny Ramirez going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s and getting thrown out of the game. He got a called third strike, for the second time, and threw his elbow pad in the air in the direction of the umpire. That’ll do it.
