Clayton Kershaw (5-5 3.49) vs. Mike Pelfrey (6-3 4.26)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are licking their wounds after taking a beating in Philly over the weekend. Of course, the Dodgers and the best record in MLB come to town to start a three game series. The Dodgers have won the last four games the Kershaw started. Pelfrey pitched a great game, his best start of the season, in his last game in Milwaukee. He’ll need to keep that going if the depleted Mets expect to beat the Dodgers tonight. It’ll be interesting to see how the Citi Field crowd greets Manny Ramirez. Don’t be too hard on him if you’re at the game, he might get into a steroid rage.

Phillies 2 – Mets 0 July 5, 2009

The Phillies finished off the sweep against the lifeless Mets today in Philly. Once again, Johan Santana was good but the Mets had nothing else to back him up. Santana went 7 i innings giving up a leadoff homer to Jimmy Rollins and a solo shot to Chase Utley in the sixth. He only allowed 3 hits in the game.

The Mets got shutout and only had 4 hits so there isn’t much offense to talk about. Luis Castillo was 2 for 2 and Santana had one of the hits. That tells you how miserable the Mets offense is right now. The Mets only scored 3 runs in the entire series in Philly.

The Mets are off tomorrow with the Dodgers coming to town for three games starting Tuesday.

Game Preview: Mets at Phillies [Game 81] July 5, 2009

phillies logoNew York Mets (39-41 Road: 17-24) at Philadelphia Phillies (41-37 Home: 15-22) 1:35 pm

Johan Santana (9-6 3.34) vs. Joe Blanton (4-4 5.08)

TV: WPIX  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets need this one to avoid the sweep in Philly before coming home to face the Dodgers. Santana has lost three of his last four decisions, and today would be an excellent opportunity for him to turn things around. Blanton hasn’t pitched that badly for the Phils but he hasn’t won a game since June 1. The Phillies have lost the five games that Blanton started. Hopefully, this lines up as a win for the Mets.

Phillies 4 – Mets 1 July 4, 2009

The Mets got a decent effort from Fernando Nieve, the kind of effort that you would expect from a guy that was claimed off waivers in the spring. He gave up 3 earned runs over 5.2 innings, not bad. Once again, the bullpen was spotless over the final 2.1 innings.

The problem again today was defense and lack of hitting. David Wright let an easy foul ball drop next to him. It appeared that a fan yelled “Got it!” and Wright thought Alex Cora was calling for it. And Omir Santos dropped an easy foul ball too that led to a run.

On offense, Cora was 3 for 4 and that accounted for half of the Mets 6 hits in the game. Even with their “offense” lineup on the field, the Mets couldn’t do anything against Jamie Moyer.

The Mets need a win tomorrow afternoon to avoid the sweep in Philly.

Oliver Perez Returns To Mets; Redding To Bullpen

OliverPerez1As expected the Mets are moving Tim Redding to the bullpen to make way for Oliver Perez‘ return from demotion “injury”. Perez made two start at Triple-A Buffalo going 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA. That’s not exactly lighting the world on fire in the minors. Perez also had 9 K’s and 9 BB’s in his two starts. The word is that Perez will start at home on Wednesday against the Dodgers.

Redding and his 6.99 ERA are headed to the bullpen, I assume to be the long man. Of Redding’s nine starts this year, I would only classify three of them as being “quality”. He’s a good emergency starter, but isn’t much more than that.

The only real question now is who Perez will replace on the roster. My assumption is that Elmer Dessens will be designated for assignment. Redding will assume his role as the righty-long reliever.
