Mets 4 – Braves 3 May 12, 2009

What a game! The Mets come back to score 2 in the eighth and 1 in the ninth to tie it, then win it in the tenth inning. Great game. This Mets team hasn’t done much late scoring this season so that was great to see. Carlos Beltran walked with the bases loaded and two outs, on a full count, to force in a run and win the game.

Mike Pelfrey was good tonight going 7 innings and giving up 2 runs. Curiously, Jerry Manuel pulled him from the game after throwing only 96 pitches. I thought that he could’ve pitched the eighth. J.J. Putz was shaky again, giving up a run in the eighth inning to raise his season ERA to 3.79 which is way too high for him. Francisco Rodriguez pitched 2 innings giving up a couple of hits and a walk but managed to get himself out of trouble.

A good sign is that the Mets only left 7 runners on base. They’ve been in double digits seemingly every game.

The rubber game of the series is tomorrow afternoon before a west coast trip starts.

Game Preview: Braves at Mets [Game 32] May 12, 2009

braves-logoAtlanta Braves (16-16 Road: 11-7) at New York Mets (17-14 Home: 11-7)  7:10 pm

Jair Jurrjens (3-2 2.01) vs. Mike Pelfrey (4-0 5.46)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Mets really need to take the next two games of this series before heading to the west coast for a 10 game road trip. Jurrjens has been outstanding this season for the Braves, as good as they could have hoped for his development. Pelfrey has been pitching okay but curiously only has one strikeout in his last three starts.

Mets Delgado May Go On Disabled List

Carlos Delgado missed another game last night due to his sore hip. The team has been reporting that it’s an issue he’ll have to deal with all season. But now we’re hearing that if it isn’t better in a few days that he might need to go on the 15-day DL.

Although Delgado has been hitting very well since last June, this won’t be a devastating loss to the team even if he’s out for an extended period of time. Fernando Tatis and Jeremy Reed can hold down first base for a while without a problem. Sure, they’ll lose some power but I like the way Tatis and Reed have been playing so far this season.

I’ve never been a big fan of Delgado’s anyway. I’ve made no secret of that here. He’s a one trick pony with power but really no other game. He’s terrible with the glove and inconsistent as a hitter. He’s the Mets best option right now at first base but I don’t expect him to be with the team after this season.

Braves 8 – Mets 3 May 11, 2009

This is the third excellent game by Johan Santana that the Mets have wasted this season. He went 6.1 innings allowing 2 runs, both unearned. It was two errors that lost this game for the Mets.

David Wright short hopped a throw to Fernando Tatis at first base that he couldn’t scoop in the first inning that led to a run. The Braves exploded for four runs in the seventh inning after Jose Reyes booted a ball behind second base with two outs. That led to four runs scoring in the inning.

Carlos Delgado didn’t play because his hip had stiffened up on him. They’re going to give it a few days to see if it gets better. If not, he may end up on the disabled list for 15 days.

Game Preview: Braves at Mets [Game 30] May 11, 2009

braves-logoAtlanta Braves (15-16 Road: 10-7) at New York Mets (17-13 Home: 11-6)  7:10 pm

Derek Lowe (4-1 3.98) vs. Johan Santana (4-1 0.91)

TV: SNY, ESPN  RadioWFAN

What to watch:  Lowe got rocked in his last start against the Marlins for 6 runs in 5 innings but still got the win. So his record is slightly deceiving. The Braves are coming off winning four of their last five games. The Mets are going for their eighth straight win tonight. Santana has been outstanding in every start this season. Lets’ hope that he can keep up the unbelievable performances once again tonight.
