Mets Roster Moves- Maine To DL; Castillo Activated

The Mets decided to go ahead and put John Maine on the disabled list because of the bone spurs in the back of his right shoulder. He hasn’t been the same pitcher over the last month and a half at all. There’s been some talk from Jerry Manuel that Maine’s season may be over, from NY Post:

“I think if we do rest him, I would think it would be a complete shutdown,” Manuel said in today’s Post. “I have to take in everything and make a decision because we want to do what’s best for John Maine, we want to do what’s best for the team. We’re in a pennant race.”

Maine to the disabled list eliminated any questions about who would go off the active roster when Luis Castillo came back. He’s in the starting lineup tonight against the Astros after not playing since July 2 because of a hip flexor injury. Now the Mets have three second basemen on the team and continue their curious roster decisions. For much of the season they’ve been carrying three catchers.

Mets Blow Lead, Lose in 10 To Astros 6-4

The Mets played a solid game until the tenth inning. Pedro Feliciano had nothing in the tenth giving up solo homers to light-hitters Darin Erstad and Brad Ausmus.

A tremendous two-homer game by Carlos Beltran was wasted. The Mets will be playing just to even the series at 2-2 tomorrow night.

Mets P Maine Will Need Off-Season Surgery

John Maine will require surgery in the off-season to remove a bone spur on the back of his right shoulder according to the Daily News. He isn’t able to throw between starts now because of the pain but plans to pitch the rest of the season through the pain.

It’s been obvious for some time that Maine has a medical problem. He had soreness in his forearm and then his shoulder. His velocity has been way down and he just doesn’t look like the same type of pitcher over the last month plus.

On Deck- August 24- Astros at Mets [Game 3]

Houston Astros (65-64 Road: 31-36) at New York Mets (72-58 Home: 40-24) 1:10pm

Randy Wolf (8-11 4.81) vs. Oliver Perez (9-7 3.93)

What to watch: Perez is 3-1 in his last four decisions. He’s been surprisingly consistent in the second half of the season. Wolf got rocked in his last start in Milwaukee giving up six runs in four innings of work.Apparently, Luis Castillo won’t be returning to the active roster today either but he can’t play in anymore rehab games. So he’s in limbo right now.
