The Mets took the rubber game of the series against the Astros today in Houston behind a 5 RBI day from Justin Turner. It didn’t look good from the start as the Mets were no hit for the first four innings by Aneury Rodriguez. He looked fantastic through four but lost his you know what in the fifth inning when the Mets scored 4. Turner had a 2-run double and Jason Pridie scored on a double steal of home.

Turner hit a 3-run homer in the sixth inning to make it 7-2 at the time. The Mets only had 5 hits and 6 walks in the game.

Chris Capuano had another decent start going 5 innings and allowing only 2 runs. It took him 94 pitches to get through five, so it wasn’t exactly efficient. But it got the job done.

The Mets finish the road trip at 4-2 taking both series’ from Houston and Colorado. They’ll face the Marlins and Nationals at home this week.

What to watch: The Mets and Astros play the rubber game of the series today in Houston. Capuano has lost three straight decisions, although the last two games he pitched very well. He gave up 4 runs over 13 innings over that span.

Rodriguez is making his third start of the season after coming out of the bullpen into the rotation. He got hit hard by the Reds in his last start for 5 runs in 5 innings. Both his previous starts this season were against the Reds. He’s a 23 year old righty from the Dominican Republic.

R.A. Dickey continued his losing ways in Houston today. The dream season that he had last year is nowhere to be found. He blew the game in the first innings by giving up 4 runs on 6 hits and throwing 45 pitches. It was really ugly. He stayed in the game into the sixth finishing with 5.1 innings, 6 runs allowed on 11 hits and no walks.

There wasn’t a lot of offense from the Mets against J.A. Happ today. They had 7 hits and 4 walks as a team. Daniel Murphy hit a solo homer to right in the fourth inning. They strung together some hits to score one in the third and one in the ninth. That was it.

The Mets and Astros will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon.

R.A. Dickey (1-4 4.50) vs. J.A. Happ (2-4 5.75)

What to watch: The Mets can win another road series with a win this afternoon behind Dickey in this battle of the pitchers that go by initials instead of names. Dickey’s pitching has been inconsistent this season and he hasn’t won a game since April 3rd. But in two starts on the road this season he’s been great with a 1.32 ERA.

Happ has been inconsistent for the Astros too. His last start in Pittsburgh was decent, a no-decision that the Astros lost. He went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks. Generally, he’s been getting hit pretty hard though, the league is hitting .285 against him.

The Mets needed an eighth inning rally to come back from down 4-0 to beat the last place Astros. The Astros have the worst record in the National League but Bud Norris held the Mets scoreless until Jason Bay hit a solo shot to deep left field in the seventh inning. Bay’s homer was a long shot to the top of the big wall in left near the train tracks.

In the eighth inning, Fernando Martinez hit another long home run off Norris into deep right field as a pinch hitter. David Wright followed with a line drive home run into the short left field seats scoring 2 runs and giving the Mets the lead.

Dillon Gee’s line wasn’t very good pitching 5 innings and giving up 4 runs. But Ryota Igarashi relieved him in the sixth and allowed 2 inherited runners to score. Igarashi threw gas on the fire and that didn’t help Gee’s ERA. But Gee was having trouble throwing his curveball for strikes.

It was a good comeback win on the road but the Astros are a terrible team, only the Twins have a worse record in MLB.

Dillon Gee (2-0 3.80) vs. Bud Norris (2-2 3.16)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The last place Mets square off against the last place Astros in another barn burner of a series. The Astros took two out of three from the Mets at Citi Field last month. The Astros have lost three series’ in a row. Norris has been pitching really well though. He’s only allowed 6 runs in his last five starts over 32 innings.

Gee is making his fourth start of the year. The Mets have won all three games that he started this season. And he hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in any start. It could be a decent pitching matchup even though both teams aren’t very good.

The Mets had a confluence of events that finally led to a home win tonight. Jason Bay came off the disabled list, Terry Collins got thrown out, and David Wright started hitting again. Maybe the most important factor of the night was that Chris Capuano had a great start going 7 innings and only allowing 1 run. He lowered his ERA to 5.95 (still awful) but made some great progress tonight. Hopefully, he can get more consistent.

The Mets had some solid offense with 8 hits and 2 walks including three home runs. But they also took advantage of some bumbling, stumbling play by the sorry Astros. Mike Nickeas had his first career home run. David Wright got off an 0 for 20 schnide with a home run and Ike Davis hit his classic straight center field shot.

The only down side to the game was that Angel Pagan left with an injury after running into Justin Turner on a pop up. It looked like he might have hyperextended his elbow but I’m sure we’ll hear more over the next day or so.
