Mets Most Valuable Coach (MVC): Dan Warthen

I’ve written before about the stunning turnaround the Mets pitching staff has taken since the firing of Rick Peterson and promotion of Dan Warthen. Oliver Perez looks like a completely different player. Mike Pelfrey, who started to figure it out under Peterson, has been astounding. But Aaron Heilman, Duaner Sanchez, and Pedro Martinez haven’t been so successful under Warthen.

image But I like Warthen’s approach, maximize each pitcher’s strengths. There’s no one approach that applies to every pitcher like Peterson seemed to have.

David Lennon of Newsday wrote a good column yesterday and had some interesting quotes:

“My first two years here, I didn’t feel like I could talk to him,” said Mike Pelfrey, who is 7-1 with a 2.83 ERA since Peterson was fired. “It always seemed like he wanted everything done his way … He always got you to believe that what he wanted was right, I just felt like sometimes he wanted to clone people and try to make people the same way. I think we’re all different, and we need different things to get problems solved.”

“All these guys have to have a voice and I don’t think they did have a voice – there was only one voice,” Warthen said. “They do a lot more speaking than I do. That’s the first thing I told them. I don’t want a bunch of clones. I want five different-looking starters, I want you guys to be who you are, and we’ll adjust to that. I’ll adjust to you, you don’t adjust to me.”

“I had a great relationship with Rick before, but you can see this is different,” Santana said. “The guys are much looser. They feel more comfortable. With Rick, there was always a lot of numbers and other stuff. This is more about being yourself.”

It’s pretty clear that the pitchers have responded well to Warthen. He’s not a “guru” in the sense that Peterson was, with his own philosophy that everyone had to abide by. In many ways he appears to have the opposite approach of Peterson, and it’s working in most cases.

On Deck- August 9- Marlins at Mets [Game 2]

Florida Marlins (61-55 Road: 28-29) at New York Mets (61-54 Home: 35-21) 7:10pm

Scott Olsen (6-6 3.87) vs. Brian Stokes (0-0 0.00)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets bullpen needs to get their act together quickly. Stokes is a Triple-A call up making a spot start. The bullpen needs to be prepared to get through 4+ innings tonight. Olsen has pitched some good games for the Marlins recently but hasn’t won a game since July 19th. With a win today, the Mets could win this important divisional series.

Mets Injury News- Maine, Castillo, and Castro

Pitcher John Maine pitched a simulated game yesterday attempting to recover from a strained rotator cuff injury. He declared himself ready to pitch to the media assembled to track his every pitch. He threw three innings and plan to pitch a bullpen session today. The plan is for him to come off the disabled list and pitch against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Luis Castillo has been playing rehab games in Port St. Lucie preparing to return from the disabled list from various hip/leg/knee injuries.

To make room on the roster for Castillo, the Mets may put Ramon Castro on the disabled list to give him time to recover from an ankle injury. The Mets thought he’d be okay to play by now but the ankle is still bothering him.

Ryan Church Cleared For Baseball Activity

Mets outfielder Ryan Church found out last night that he’s cleared to resume baseball activities. He’ll report to Florida this weekend to work out and begin playing in rehab games this coming week.

Church had tests in Manhattan on Thursday that showed that his post concussion syndrome symptoms are cleared.

He could re-join the Mets when they return from a road trip on August 19th.

Perez Silences Marlins For Mets Win 3-0

Oliver Perez resumed his brilliant second half pitching against the Florida Marlins going seven shutout innings. He gave up only two hits, three walks, and had eight strikeouts. Aaron Heilman pitched the final two innings flawlessly for his first save of the season. He actually looked completely dominating.

Gary Cohen said during the TV broadcast that pitching coach Dan Warthen had been working with Heilman on standing more straight up. Hopefully, Heilman can replicate the type of performance he had last night.

The Mets runs were scored on a pair of home runs by David Wright and Carlos Delgado.

On Deck- August 8- Marlins at Mets [Game 1]

Florida Marlins (61-54 Road: 28-28) at New York Mets (60-54 Home: 34-21) 7:10pm

R. Nolasco (11-6 3.91) vs. Oliver Perez (7-7 4.12)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets get a chance to do some damage in the NL East this weekend against the Marlins. Nolasco has pitched two good games in a row now. Perez took the loss in Houston in his last start but has pitched very well over the last two months.
