Video: Mets deGrom Talks 2018 Goals

Jacob deGrom talked to SNY this week about his goals for the season. No surprises here, he’s shooting to win the Cy Young Award and World Series. He correctly points out that the health of the pitchers, collectively, is the most important factor in the Mets success this year.

deGrom is going into his 30 year old season in 2018 with just over 3 years of MLB service time. He’ll earn $7.4 million this year and be eligible for arbitration in 2019 and free agency in 2021.

Viggo Mortensen on 2015 Mets

viggo mortensenThe Post got Viggo Mortensen to write a preview of the 2015 Mets. It’s pretty good except for the minor error to mention EY Jr. as a part of the team. He signed a minor league deal with the Braves this week. But otherwise, it’s a pretty solid fan piece.

Mortensen wrote about Matt Harvey and the other pitchers “…Add rookie sensation de Grom, plus rock-solid Colón, Wheeler, Gee, Niese, Torres, Mejia, Familia, Montero, Edgin, Black, Syndergaard… could be an intimidating pitching staff. Don’t count Parnell out either; he could come back with a vengeance as a closer. Sorry if I am leaving anyone out. Bottom line is that the Mets have a lot of talented young pitchers.” I give Mortensen an “A” for effort and optimism.

Mets Sign Bartolo Colon

bartolo colonThe Mets finalized a 2-year/$20 million contract with Bartolo Colon yesterday. He’s over 40 years old and has been suspended for PED use in the past. But it’ll help get the Mets through the 2014 season without Matt Harvey. Colon had a big year with the A’s last season with 18 wins and a 2.65 ERA.

We’ll see if Colon can duplicate his performance with the Mets. Even if he gets 9 or 10 wins with an ERA under 4.00, that would be a win for the Mets.

Jeremy Hefner Starts Against the Nationals Today

Talk about a let down for Mets fans after an exciting night of Matt Harvey starting against the Nationals! Jeremy Hefner starts against the Nats today going up against Gio Gonzalez in the “Tough Act to Follow” game of the series.

The sparse crowd at Citi Field last night was rightfully fired up to see Harvey put on another show and go to 4-0 for the season out-dueling Stephen Strasburg.

Unfortunately for Fox Sports, they get the Saturday afternoon game today with Hefner on the mound sporting his 7.20 ERA. Hefner’s certainly wearing the title of “Most Likely to be Replaced by Zack Wheeler” so far this season.

Hefner’s made two starts and got rocked in one for 5 runs in 3 innings. And he got bombed in one relief appearance for 2 runs in 1 inning. It’s become a waiting game to see how long Hefner can hold onto his roster spot with the Mets before being designated for assignment.

Mets Johan Santana May Need Shoulder Surgery

johan satana2Multiple media reports state that Mets ace Johan Santana had an MRI on his shoulder today that indicated a probable re-tear of his surgically repaired shoulder capsule. In all likelihood, Santana’s season is over and so is his Mets career.

Santana will finish his Mets career pitching in four seasons to a 46-34 record with a 3.18 ERA over 109 games. The injuries were a huge disappointment but we’ll never forget the 2012 no-hitter with the game saving catch by Mike Baxter.

The Wilpons must be kicking themselves now for not insuring Santana’s contract against injury. At least this is the last season of the contract. They’ll be finished with Santana after this season on the disabled list.
