Wright’s 2 HR Leads Mets Over Mariners 8-2
David Wright appeared to make the most of his day off yesterday. He hit two home runs in his first two at-bats to put the game out of reach early. Jose Reyes chipped in with a three run homer of his own in the third inning. From there the Mets cruised to a win.
John Maine was solid but not spectacular tonight going six innings giving up two runs on five hits and two walks. He also had three strikeouts. The bullpen worked three clean innings giving up only one hit.
The Mets avoid a sweep at the hands of the lowly Mariners tonight before beginning a series with the Yankees on Friday.
Mets Claim Andy Phillips From Waivers
Andy Phillips was claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. He’s a right handed hitting first baseman but only had 21 at-bats for the Reds this season. He was 3 for 21. However, he did hit well at Triple-A Louisville: .315/ 5 HR/ 22 RBI in 40 games.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Wayne Krivsky just joined the Mets organization as a special assistant to the GM. He’s the one that signed Phillips with the Reds.
This may signal that the Mets front office is feeling the same dissatisfaction with Carlos Delgado that the fans are. I sure hope so.
On Deck: June 25- Mariners At Mets
Seattle Mariners (28-49 Road: 13-25) at New York Mets (37-39 Home: 20-16) 7:10pm
Miguel Batista (3-9 6.26) vs. John Maine (7-5 3.78)
What to watch: The Mets try to avoid a home sweep at the hands of the worst team in baseball. Incredible! Maine had a good start in Colorado last Friday. Let’s hope that he can keep it going. I haven’t seen any suspensions announced from MLB yet for Jerry Manuel and Carlos Beltran. We’ll have to keep an eye on that.

Video: Manuel And Beltran Ejected
Last night Carlos Beltran and Jerry Manuel were ejected from the Mariners-Mets game for arguing balls and strikes. As I said in my earlier post about the game recap, umpire Brian Runge was completely out of line and started the whole confrontation. Here’s the proof:
