The Mets finally got a win to take one in the three-game series in Arizona. Oliver Perez was his usual self, working out of big trouble in the first few innings. He went 5.1 innings allowing 6 hits and 6 walks while striking out 7, but only allowed one run. His WHIP is up to a putrid 1.91.

The Mets offense was helped out by some dreadful play at catcher by the D-Backs. Both Chris Snyder and Miguel Montero had trouble holding onto pitches allowing three Mets runs to score on passed balls and wild pitches. They actually looked worse than the Mets. But the Mets did manage to put up 11 hits in the game but only two extra base hits. Both were triples by Cory Sullivan.

Omir Santos had a nice block of the plate against a charging Mark Reynolds. He held the ball while getting knocked down on a hard play, but a clean one. Nice job by Santos.

Oliver Perez (2-3 6.38) vs. Jon Garland (6-10 4.33)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid a sweep again before coming home to face the Giants starting on Friday. Perez had his best start of year against the Padres last Friday going 6.1 innings and giving up just 1 run. Garland threw a complete game win against the Mets on Aug. 2, but got hammered by the Nationals for a loss in his last start.

D-Backs 7 – Mets 4 Aug. 10, 2009

Mike Pelfrey came back to the Mets with a thud, giving up 5 runs in 6 innings. He didn’t get any help from Angel Pagan in center field. Pagan had a throwing error and made a terrible diving attempt at a line drive by Doug Davis that went for a double. Elmer Dessens threw some gas on the fire too, giving up 2 runs in the seventh inning, including a solo home run.

The Mets offense wasn’t terrible. They actually managed to get two extra base hits of their nine total hits. That’s an explosion for this weak team. Anderson Hernandez and Luis Castillo had two hits apiece.

The Mets did score two in the ninth but it wasn’t even close to enough for a comeback.

The Mets are back to their losing ways after a brief respite yesterday.

TV: SNY

What to watch: The D-Backs just got swept in Washington. The Mets are catching the D-Backs with Justin Upton on the DL with a strained quadriceps. The D-Backs have won the last three games that Davis started including a 3-2 win over the Mets on July 31. Pelfrey is making his first start back with the team after his son was born. The Mets have lost three of the last four games that Pelfrey started.

Audio: Post Game Mets-D-Backs August 3, 2009

d-backs logoHere’s the post game audio from the Mets 6-5 loss to the D-Backs. It’s the Mets third loss in this four game series at Citi Field. This lost series may well be the death knell for the 2009 version of the Mets that we’ve all come to dislike. Dropping to 50-55 on the season and 8 games out of the wild card leaves us with little hope for post-season play.

The Mets appeared to be lost right from the start of this one only to come back and get into the game. Nelson Figueroa got absolutely demolished! He gave up 6 runs in 1.2 innings including three home runs, two to Mark Reynolds. The bullpen did a great job of holding the D-Backs scoreless over the final 7.1 innings but the damage was done.

The Mets climbed back into the game scoring in the third, fifth, and sixth innings.

The really bad news here is that the Mets lost three of four at home to the lowly D-Backs. This type of terrible series just shows how poor this Mets team is right now. And don’t expect to see Figueroa again with the Mets after this dismal performance. At 35 years old they’re just not going to give him multiple chances to get bombed like he did tonight.

Game Preview: D-Backs at Mets [Game 105] August 3, 2009

d-backs logoArizona D-Backs (46-59 Road: 22-26) at New York Mets (50-54 Home: 29-23) 7:10pm

Dan Haren (10-6 2.19) vs. Nelson Figueroa (0-1 4.50)

TV: SNY

What to watch: Figueroa is making a spot start because of the rain forced double header last Thursday. Haren has had a terrific season but he has been vulnerable in his last two starts only going 5 innings in each. Hopefully, that trend will continue or the Mets will be in serious danger of losing three of four games at home to the D-Backs.
