2012 Mets Still Exceeding Expectations

As Mets fans, we’ve come to expect second half disappointments since the 2007 season. So the 2012 season is nothing new for us. The collapse has come in July and August instead of September like it usually does. But the 2012 Mets are still exceeding my expectations.

Before the season I predicted that this would be a 65-70 win team. Currently, the Mets are on pace to win 73. That would be a solid season for the sad roster that the Mets put together this season.

Let’s face it. The Mets won 77 games last year and then lost one of the best players in team history, Jose Reyes, in free agency. They traded Angel Pagan to the Giants for a bag of balls. Mets Trade Angel Pagan to Giants

The Mets traded Angel Pagan to the Giants for outfielder Andres Torres and reliever Ramon Ramirez. Pagan is a tremendous athlete that frustrated Mets fans with bonehead plays in the field and on the bases. He appeared to be making great strides to realize his potential in 2010 but took a step back in 2011. Hopefully, he’ll realize that potential with the Giants because he seems like one of the good guys in the game.

Ramon Ramirez is the important piece of the trade for the Mets. He’s been working the middle innings in the majors since 2006 to some success. His career ERA is 3.16. That’s pretty good for a career middle reliever. Surprisingly, the Mets are Ramirez’ fifth team in seven seasons. That goes to show how little a priority that middle relievers are.

Andres Torres is a throw-in in this deal. He’s a light-hitting switch hitter with some speed that plays solid defense in the outfield. He’ll be 34 years old next season and hasn’t made it to free agency yet. He made $2.2 million last season so he’ll be in line for a little bit of a salary increase. I would guess the Mets see him as a fourth outfielder and plan to make another move to replace Pagan in center field.

The Mets have been a team that has never quit when they are down.   Tonight was no different.

R.A. Dickey struggled against the Cardinals lineup.  Dickey went 6 and a 1/3 innings, and gave up 4 runs on 8 hits.   Despite his struggles, the Mets as a team continue to show that they never back down and never quit .  That is one of the most important traits of this team that makes this team enjoyable to watch.

The Mets would get back into the game as Carlos Beltran hit a two-run home run in the 5th inning.   Josh Thole came through with two RBI singles that contributed to the Mets comeback.  But, the guy who gave the Mets the game winner was Angel Pagan.  Pagan hit a walk-off solo HR right below the SNY crew, and gave the Mets the win against the Cards.

Dodgers 6 – Mets 0 July 7, 2011

The Dodgers finally took one game of the four game series tonight. They did it behind a great game by Clayton Kershaw who went 8 innings and only allowed 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9. Dillon Gee was matching him through the first 5 innings. He only allowed 1 hit to the Dodgers. But Gee lost it in the sixth inning when the Dodgers scored 5 runs.

The Mets had very little offense as you would guess. They only had 6 hits in the game and 4 walks. Angel Pagan and Daniel Murphy both had a couple of hits in the game. And the Mets managed to load the bases in the ninth inning but couldn’t rally enough to even score one run.

The Mets are headed to San Francisco for a three game series starting tomorrow night.

The Mets went west and won the first game of the four game series in LA tonight. They did it behind another solid effort by Chris Capuano who went 6 innings and allowed only 2 runs. Bobby Parnell and K-Rod closed it out with 3 scoreless innings of relief.

The Mets continued to single and double teams to death with 8 hits and 1 walk in the game. The big inning for the Mets was the sixth when they got run scoring doubles from Angel Pagan, Carlos Beltran, and Daniel Murphy. Pagan was 2 for 5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs, and 1 RBI.

The Mets and Dodgers will do it again tomorrow night at 10pm.

Preview: Yankees at Mets July 3, 2011

What to watch: The Mets are trying to avoid the home sweep today if the weather allows. Its’ supposed to be raining pretty heavily on and off today. If you’re home watching today, don’t forget that the game is on TBS for some reason.

Garcia has been pitching incredibly well for the Yanks lately. He hasn’t gone less than 6 innings in a start since June 7th. He’s won three of his last four starts and hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a game during that span.

Everyone on the Mets will need to pick it up today without Jose Reyes in the lineup. Angel Pagan will be hitting leadoff and Ruben Tejada will be at shortstop. Dickey’s last two starts against Detroit and Oakland were both solid. He pitched 15 innings and allowed 4 runs in those starts.
