The Mets were victimized by a very solid complete game by Jon Garland. I won’t dwell the fact that the Mets should have signed Garland in the offseason instead of Oliver Perez. Garland only gave up 7 hits and 2 runs, but this is the Mets weak offense that he did it against.

Mike Pelfrey struggled through 5 innings  giving up 3 runs on 107 pitches.

Gary Sheffield made his return to the lineup as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth and stayed in to play left field. He told reporters that he wasn’t thrilled about not starting today, and this is after he wasn’t thrilled about going on the disabled list in the first place.

The Mets are in a bad spot now after losing two of the first three games to the D-Backs. Tomorrow night they go up against Dan Haren. Bad news.

Arizona D-Backs (45-59 Road: 21-26) at New York Mets (50-53 Home: 29-22) 1:10pm

Jon Garland (5-10 4.42) vs. Mike Pelfrey (8-6 4.72)

TV: SNY

What to watch: This is the third of a four game series. Garland hasn’t won a game in almost a month but has pitched pretty well. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a start since June 25. Pelfrey is 1-1 in his last two starts but he’s pitched 13.1 innings and allowed only 3 runs.

Game Preview: D-Backs at Mets [Game 103] August 1, 2009

Max Scherzer (6-6 3.61) vs. Oliver Perez (2-3 7.42)

TV: WPIX

What to watch: Scherzer has been pitching pretty well this season: 111 K’s and only 40 BB’s. He’s been a little inconsistent but not compared to the guy he’s pitching against today. Perez hasn’t won a game since July 8 and hasn’t gone more than 6 innings since coming off the disabled list four starts ago.

D-Backs 3 – Mets 2 July 31, 2009

The Mets got their third straight solid start from Livan Hernandez tonight. He went 6 innings giving up only two solo homers. And he was pulled in the bottom of the sixth for a pinch hitter. Angel Berroa of all people. That one was hard to swallow. This guy is clearly not a big league player. He looks like an independent league player to me.

The Mets only offense came on two solo homers by Daniel Murphy and David Wright. The team managed only 4 hits all night but did have 7 walks.

The game hinged on Sean Green pitching in the eighth inning. He came in with one man on, hit a batter, then walked another to load the bases. Then he threw a wild pitch that allowed Justin Upton to score, and that was the game. It’s a terrible way to lose a game.
