Mets 6- Braves 4 May 4, 2009

Carlos Beltran hit two long homers to center field in the sixth and seventh innings to put this one away for the Mets. David Wright also homered in the sixth and was 2 for 4 on the night, which is great to see him get something going offensively.

John Maine was solid except for a meltdown in the second inning. He walked 3 and they all came around to score. But he recovered to pitch 6 innings, only giving up the 3 runs and he got the win. He ended up with 7 K’s and 6 walks. It was too many walks but his velocity and location was pretty good for much of the night.

J.J. Putz did give up 2 hits in the eighth including a solo homer to Chipper Jones. That raises his ERA to 3.60. I expected him to be more dominating than he has been. We’ll have to keep an eye on him as the season goes on.

What to watch:  The Mets and Braves start a two game series tonight with Maine and Vasquez going. Vasquez has been pretty good for the Braves so far this season, although he did give up 5 runs in a loss to the Cardinals in his last start. The Braves are coming off losing 2 of 3 at home to the Astros. The Mets are coming off a 2-game, rain shortened, split series in Philly. This is the first time these teams have met this season.

Chipper Jones Talks Mets Baseball

The past two seasons have seen the Mets and Phillies engage in a war of words. But the Phillies have gotten it done on the field, winning the division in both seasons. Jimmy Rollins, Carlos Beltran, Cole Hamels, John Maine, and Francisco Rodriguez have all gotten involved.

Chipper Jones finally landed the Atlanta Braves on the trash-talking map this week in an interview with The Sporting News. From the interview:

We won for 14 consecutive years, and you never, ever saw any bulletin board material. And now that these two teams are on top of the division, they can’t keep their mouths shut. Just go play baseball. It’s Cole Hamels now. It was Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Beltran the past couple of springs. These two teams are constantly going at each other verbally. You know, win with class, lose with class. Just keep your mouth shut and go play your game.

Jones also chides the Mets for using their financial resources to secure the two best closers available on the market. He chalks this up to “the rich get richer”. You have to take a few minutes to read the column. Jones also discusses how the Braves made the best trade offer to the Padres for Jake Peavy, but Peavy didn’t want to play for Atlanta.

I guess it’s about time that someone from the Braves popped off. But Jones’ comments seem contrived, like he’s trying to make the Braves relevant in the NL East. The Braves have had an incredibly quiet off-season and don’t appear to be poised to make a run at the division title in 2009.

I have to say that I like that the Mets are the talk of the NL East. Clearly, the Mets have gotten into the heads of the Phillies and Braves. Hopefully, that will translate into wins on the field.

Mets Bullpen Falls Apart Again In 7-6 Loss To Braves

The Mets had a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Mike Pelfrey didn’t have one of his best games, but it was good enough. He went six innings giving up three runs, a quality start. Then came the infamous Mets bullpen. It’s incredible that nobody can be trusted in the bullpen. I can’t remember such poor performances as a group as the 2008 Mets bullpen.

Schoenweiss, Smith, Feliciano, and Heilman all contributed to today’s disaster in Atlanta. It’s the same old story.

Another great offensive game by Carlos Delgado was wasted. He went 4 for 5 with 2 runs, 3 RBI’s, and a dramatic home run in the ninth to get the Mets within one run of tying the game.

Unbelievable…
