Mets 4- Braves 3 May 5, 2009

The Mets complete the 2-game sweep of the Braves in Atlanta tonight. That was a close one that shouldn’t have been as close as it was. Livan Hernandez was outstanding tonight going 6.1 innings giving up only 1 run. He only threw 74 pitches on the night. It was a really good game for him. He had a nice sacrifice bunt and threw out a runner at third as well. Great game for him.

David Wright had two hits again tonight but still looks like he has a wicked upper cut to me. But if he can keep hitting I guess it really doesn’t matter. Ramon Castro was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and an RBI. He’s been making a case to get the bulk of the playing time at catcher until Brian Schneider gets back from the disabled list.

The real fun came at the end of the game. Carlos Delgado had a nice 2 RBI single with the bases loaded to make the score 4-1. It turned out that they needed those runs. Delgado dropped a routine pop up with 2 outs and 2 runners on. That kept the inning alive and the Braves scored two runs off Francisco Rodriguez. But it wasn’t enough to avoid the sweep as the Mets were able to get out of the jam.

Game Preview: Mets at Phillies [Game 24] May 3, 2009

John Maine (1-2 5.40) vs. Joe Blanton (0-2 8.41)

Update (12:21 pm): The game has been rained out and will be re-scheduled at a later date.

What to watch:  The Mets and Phils kick off the rubber game of the series this afternoon on WPIX in New York. Blanton’s been having some serious problems this season, while Maine was very strong in his last start against the Marlins. We’ll see if Carlos Delgado feels healthy enough to start today after pinch hitting yesterday. Fernando Tatis has been filling in at first base very capably in his absence.

Game Preview: Mets at Phillies [Game 23] May 2, 2009

Phillies logoNew York Mets (10-12 Road: 4-6) at Philadelphia Phillies (11-10 Home: 5-8) 3:40 pm

Oliver Perez (1-2 9.31) vs.Jamie Moyer (3-1 5.09)

TV: Fox  RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Mets took the first game of the rivalry series last night. Perez gets his shot on national TV today against a Phils team that he’s had historical success against. I question how much that actually means but he was 1-0 with a 0.35 ERA in 4 starts against them last season. Perez may very well be pitching to keep his spot in the rotation today. Moyer’s last start was excellent, going 6 innings against the Marlins and giving up only 1 run. There’s word that Carlos Delgado (hip) may go on the disabled list if he isn’t ready to play today.

Ricky Nolasco (1-2 6.86) vs. Livan Hernandez (1-1 7.31)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: Both starting pitchers are having ugly seasons so far. We haven’t received word yet if Carlos Delgado will be able to play tonight. He saw a doctor today after experiencing pain in his hip. Also, Luis Castillo probably won’t play after having back spasms yesterday.

Carlos Delgado will be examined by a doctor today to evaluate his sore hip. He first felt the injury on Sunday when he hit a triple and slid into third base. Delgado didn’t play against the Florida Marlins last night but doesn’t expect the injury to be anything major.

More information as it comes in this afternoon.

Mets Edge Brewers 5-4 April 17, 2009

Score April 17, 2009Livan Hernandez did his job as the fifth starter, he kept them in the game. His line doesn’t look great at 5 IP and 4 ER though. But he was doing pretty well until the sixth inning when Ryan Braun hit a three run bomb to left field. He had a little trouble in the fifth inning, but the shot by Braun put the Brewers ahead 4-3.

The bullpen continued their excellent work by throwing four shutout innings. What a change from last season!

The Mets were able to work themselves back into the game in the seventh when Gary Sheffield hit a solo homer, the 500th of his career. He got a nice standing ovation from the crowd as well. The team appears to have embraced Sheffield, they were all out on the field to greet him as he crossed home plate. The homer tied the game at 4-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, Carlos Delgado hit a double to left field. In another nice change from last season, Luis Castillo was able to bring him home with a single to score the winning run.

The Mets are now 6-5 on the season.

Padres, Peavey Top Mets 6-5 April 16, 2009

Score 4.16.09The rubber game of the series started well for the Mets with Carlos Delgado hitting a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first. But it didn’t last long as John Maine fell apart in the third inning and only lasted through five. He gave up 7 hits and 3 walks totaling 6 runs.

Maine’s velocity looked good but his control wasn’t. His pitches consistently were over the middle of the plate. It was a poor outing especially considering the news that Mike Pelfrey may have to miss a start due to forearm tendinitis.

The Mets looked like they might come back when Ramon Castro hit a 2-run homer in the eighth inning off Duaner Sanchez. But the Mets couldn’t put anything else together to tie up the game.

The Mets lose their second series of the season. This one particularly hurts, losing a home series to a team from the west coast that doesn’t figure to contend this season is tough.

The Mets drop to 4-5.
