What to watch: The Mets and Marlins play an afternoon game for the rubber game of the series. This is a premier pitching match-up and a re-match of a game in Miami that the Marlins won on a Daniel Murphy botched fly ball. Murphy will be in the lineup today so he better not mess this up for Santana again. That game was Santana’s only loss of the season. By the way, I’ll be at the game today. If you’ll be there too send me an email at my Contact page.

Mets Beltran Won’t Slide And I Don’t Care

Within a five day span we’ve seen two examples of Carlos Beltran not sliding on plays that he clearly should have. You know what? I don’t care. It doesn’t bother me at all. The simple fact is that when you’re the best position player on the team with the highest payroll in the league you can make judgment calls.

On April 21st Beltran didn’t slide against the St. Louis Cardinals on a play at home. He stepped on Yadier Molina‘s foot and was tagged out. It was a bizarre play that Cards third baseman Joe Thurston made a great hustle play and throw on.

Yesterday Beltran didn’t slide on a steal attempt at second base because he thought that he heard David Wright hit the ball. He slowed up and was tagged out on the throw. Of course, the crowd boo’d him. He admitted after the game that he should have slid.

I’ve heard some people talking about how this is a bad influence on the younger players on the Mets. If any of the younger players on the Mets think that they’re the best position player on the team they should feel free to make judgement calls that are afforded to veterans like Beltran.

Of course, I’d like to see Beltran show the fire and go all out that everyone else wants from him. That’s not the way he is and I’ve accepted that along with his .406 batting average, outstanding defense, and 1.067 OPS. He’s kind of a soft player, not the kind that we like in New York. But he’s also an excellent player, maybe not one of the great ones, but very good.

Frankly, if he can avoid taking a few hits along the way this season he may be able to stay healthy enough to play 161 games like he did last season. That’s no small feat by the way. I’d rather see Beltran playing nearly every game this season than worry about one play and whether he slid or not.

In case you haven’t noticed, Carlos Beltran isn’t the problem with this Mets team. If you feel compelled to boo the home team, make note of every starting pitcher not named Johan Santana. Make sure that you notice Daniel Murphy stumbling around left field like a little leaguer and David Wright‘s .371 slugging percentage. Those are the problems with this team not Carlos Beltran.

Mets Starting Pitching May Force Roster, Coaching Changes

Oliver PerezAfter the Mets humiliating defeat in St. Louis yesterday, manager Jerry Manuel spoke to the media about some possible changes to the roster in the near future. Manuel said that they’ll go one more time, as is, through the pitching rotation. If the starting pitchers, other than Johan Santana, can’t overcome their problems the Mets will make changes.

Manuel said that he would like to immediately add a 13th pitcher to the Mets roster. The logic being that the starters are pitching so few innings right now that it would keep the existing pitchers in the bullpen from getting burned out early in the season. Manuel admitted that he’s concerned about how many innings the bullpen is logging already.

Another issue is to figure out which position player will pay the price by losing a roster spot to add another pitcher. I suspect that Jeremy Reed is the most likely candidate. If it was up to me, I would option Daniel Murphy for reasons written before on this site that I won’t go into again.

Adam Rubin of the Daily News reports that the Mets are already considering making changes to the coaching staff. Rubin also notes that the Mets are considering optioning Mike Pelfrey or Oliver Perez to the minors. That would be quite a shake-up, moving the #2 or #3 starter to the minors!

Although some of these ideas sound desperate, I’m glad that they’re not just going with the status quo because it’s April. The Mets have a lot of seats left to sell and this team isn’t inspiring me to go out and buy more seats. That doesn’t even mention the fact that the last two seasons have been lost to one or two games, so they can’t just give games away even if it is only April.

Mets Daniel Murphy Experiment Should End Now

Daniel MurphyI like Daniel Murphy and I believe that he has the potential to be a solid, if not good, major league player for a long time. He’s a hard worker and a good guy that the Mets organization really likes. And I like that too.

Daniel Murphy is not a major league left fielder. It’s as simple as that. Even when he doesn’t get charged with an error, he has misplayed balls like the two last night in St. Louis.

The fact is that Murphy has a decent bat, but it isn’t good enough to carry his poor defense. He’s clearly playing out of position and I respect that he’s giving it his all. But the Mets need to end the embarrassment that Murphy is suffering on a daily basis in the field.

Murphy shouldn’t be learning on the job at the major league level. There are 24 other players on the team and millions of fans that need to get past the last two seasons of gut-wrenching loses. We can’t have our season hinge on his learning curve in the field. The Mets sub-.500 season thus far isn’t all his fault. I’m not saying that it is. But he’s the only one on the team that has no business being out on the field. You don’t have to be a major league scout or talent evaluator to know that.

The correct course of action is for the Mets to give Murphy time at Triple-A Buffalo to hone his outfield skills until he’s ready for this level of play, if he ever will be. And he may not ever be ready. But we shouldn’t have to find that out with the big club.

Option Murphy to Buffalo now and spare us the disappointment in him. The embarrassment that he’s been suffering over the last two weeks may even stunt his growth as a player. He has to know that he’s letting the rest  of the team down, not to mention the fans.

Cory Sullivan and Fernando Martinez are waiting in the wings at Buffalo. Gary Sheffield and Jeremy Reed appear to be capable outfielders right now. Maglio Ordonez and Matt Holliday will likely be available via trade before the deadline in July if things aren’t working out with the existing cast of characters. There are a lot of options here for the Mets. The Murphy experiment should end now for everyone’s benefit.

Cardinals 6- Mets 4 April 21, 2009

42109I think at the end of the year we’ll look back at this game as one of the ugliest losses of the season. Oliver Perez was pitching pretty well until he completely lost it in the bottom of the fifth culminating when he walked light-hitting Khalil Greene with the bases loaded. Casey Fossum came in and threw gas on the fire by walking Joe Thurston with the bases loaded. Ugly!

We had catchers interference called on Ramon Castro. Daniel Murphy got picked off first base by the catcher, then botched two balls badly in left field. J.J. Putz got hit hard in the eighth, giving up 2 runs. Carlos Beltran inexplicably didn’t slide into home on a ball that he clearly should’ve slid.

This was just an all-around bad game.

Mets Beat Sloppy Padres 7-2 April 15, 2009

Oliver Perez did a great job tonight going 6 innings with 1 run on 3 hits and 2 BB’s. It’s amazing how different he can be from start to start. He threw a lot more changeup’s than he has in the past. And I noticed that he wasn’t rocking his upper body in the “bowing” motion that he started last season. Clearly, he’s still trying to figure things out. Hopefully, he’s got something that works now.

The Mets took advantage of some extremely sloppy play by the Padres in the seventh inning scoring four runs. The Padres were throwing the ball around the infield like little leaguers. The two walks and an infield hit didn’t help things either.

Carlos Delgado hit one out to the overhang porch in right field for his 471st career homer. Gary Sheffield got his first start in right field. It was pretty uneventful going 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored.

Daniel Murphy was absolutely brutal in left field blowing two plays. The league has already caught on to his defensive liability. The Padres were running on him in unusual situations. He also botched the easiest play he could make, he couldn’t even throw to home plate on a runner that was trying to score from second. He’s got no arm out there at all.

The Mets go to 4-4 on the season.

Marlins Over Mets 5-4 In Walkoff April 10, 2009

The good news for the Mets tonight is that John Maine looked pretty good. He went five innings giving up two runs, both on solo homers from Hanely Ramirez and Dan Uggla. He threw 83 pitches and 54 strikes. That’s a nice game for Maine who struggled at times during spring training.

The Mets offense came from Daniel Murphy, Carlos Beltran, and Ryan Church who had three hits each tonight. But as a team the Mets were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. That’s been plaguing the team throughout the early season. Beltran had a solo homer in the sixth to put the Mets on the board and an RBI ground out in the seventh.

Jeremy Reed came through with a huge pinch-hit single in the ninth to tie the game. But it wasn’t enough as Pedro Feliciano and Darren O’Day coughed up the lead in the bottom of the frame. Jorge Cantu singled in the winning run in the form of Emilio Bonifacio. Bonifacio looks like he’s going to be a good player. He’s got blazing speed.

The Marlins are still undefeated at 4-0 while the Mets drop to 2-2.
