Mets Sweep Braves With Dramatic 5-4 Victory

The Mets swept the Braves in this three game series with a tremendous win in the bottom of the ninth. David Wright doubled in the inning and Carlos Delgado drove him in with a line drive to left field that Omar Infante lost in the lights.

Pedro Martinez went seven innings giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk. He also had six strikeouts. His first pitch of the game was crushed for a homer by Yunel Escobar. This is the kind of performance that we can expect from Pedro on a regular basis at this point. He’s an average pitcher.

Luis Ayala did a nice job in relief to finish the eighth and cruise through the ninth.

The offense came from Carlos Delgado with a 5 for 5 night. His first five hit game in ten years. He also had three RBI’s including the game winner. David Wright also had three hits including a solo homer in the fifth and the clutch double in the ninth.

The down side is that the Mets left nine runners on base in the game, but a win is a win.

The Phillies lost to the Nationals so the Mets take a 2.5 game lead in the division.

Mets Suffer Humiliating Loss To Pirates 7-5

The Mets wasted a good start by Pedro Martinez against one of baseball’s worst teams. In a season that’s been filled with heart-wrenching losses for Mets fans, this one ranks near the top of the list.

Pedro went six innings giving up only one run on 3 hits and 4 walks. The Mets had a 5-1 lead on homers by David Wright and Robinson Cancel.

Enter the Mets bullpen in the seventh. The usual suspects were bombed again: Joe Smith and Pedro Feliciano. Duaner Sanchez finished the seventh inning and worked a clean eighth. Aaron Heilman came into the game in the ninth to preserve the win and got lit up again for three runs on two hits and a walk. Scott Schoenweiss actually gave up the winning hit light-hitting outfielder Steve Pearce.

What a stunning loss! It’s hard to take much more of this.

Mets Power Blasts Marlins 8-6

The Mets got home runs from Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, and Daniel Murphy’s first career long ball. David Wright and Beltran both had three hits in the game. The offense was on tonight big time. The Mets had 13 hits and a walk but only left four men on base.

Brian Stokes spot start was pretty successful. He went 5.2 innings giving up four runs. He’s got a mid-90’s fastball but it’s straight as an arrow. He also throws a lot balls high in the strike zone. It’ll be interesting to see if the Mets keep him around in the bullpen.

Joe Smith was ugly out of the bullpen in the eighth inning giving up two runs on three hits and only getting one out. But Aaron Heilman got his second save in as many days in another impressive inning.

The Phillies won tonight so the Mets hold even at one game back.

Perez Silences Marlins For Mets Win 3-0

Oliver Perez resumed his brilliant second half pitching against the Florida Marlins going seven shutout innings. He gave up only two hits, three walks, and had eight strikeouts. Aaron Heilman pitched the final two innings flawlessly for his first save of the season. He actually looked completely dominating.

Gary Cohen said during the TV broadcast that pitching coach Dan Warthen had been working with Heilman on standing more straight up. Hopefully, Heilman can replicate the type of performance he had last night.

The Mets runs were scored on a pair of home runs by David Wright and Carlos Delgado.

Wright’s Walk Off Powers Mets Over Padres 5-3

David Wright hit a walk off two run homer with two outs in the ninth. What a way to atone for his blunders on the bases in the last two games. He went 3 for 5 on the day with two RBI’s.

It was a typical Johan Santana start. He was excellent pitching into the eighth inning, and then the bullpen came in and blew the lead. Duaner Sanchez hit a batter in the eighth and Scott Schoenweiss gave up a solo homer in the ninth. The bullpen is a complete disaster at this point.

The Mets end up taking two of three from the Padres and gain a game today on the Phillies to move to 2 games back of the NL East lead.

Santana CG Leads Mets Over Cards 9-1

Box score

The Mets jumped all over St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse today, taking the rubber game of the series. The Mets finish their home stand going 4-2. Lohse was roughed up for seven runs over five innings. By contrast, Johan Santana went all nine innings giving up six hits and one walk for one run.

Santana had a run saved by Carlos Beltran making an outstanding catch over the center field wall on a bomb hit by Ryan Ludwick. Albert Pujols homered in the next at-bat for the Cards only run.

The Mets offense was led by David Wright and Fernando Tatis. Wright was 3 for 5 with a home run, and Tatis was 3 for 4 with a home run.

Mets Streaking Again, Lose Second In A Row

Despite a good effort by Oliver Perez the Mets lost their second straight game to the Cincinnati Reds 7-2. Perez went six innings giving up three runs, two of which were earned. The story of the night was the Mets having tons of opportunity to score against Reds starter Josh Fogg and not taking advantage of it. The Mets had ten hits and only scored two runs in the game!

In the seventh inning Mike Lincoln came in with the bases loaded and struck out David Wright and Carlos Beltran, both looking.

Pedro Feliciano came into the game in the seventh inning and got rocked for four runs in .1 innings. Ouch. It didn’t help that Aaron Heilman relieved Feliciano and gave up a bases clearing triple to Joey Votto.

The most surprising part of the game was watching Beltran kick the ball around the outfield. He’s always such a consistently good fielder. I know there are some balls that he doesn’t come in on very well. But it just seems like he never makes a mistake in the field. Last night he kicked two balls around. One he was charged with and error, only his third of the season, and the other he misplayed on the fly then kicked on the ground but wasn’t charged an error.

The Mets try to even the series in the final game before coming home for an off-day and then the Phillies at home.
