Mets Lose Another 2-1 Game To Padres

Johan Santana pitched well but hurt himself with an error in the bottom of the sixth on a throw to third base. He pitched six innings giving up two runs (one earned). But Randy Wolf was better tonight going seven innings and giving up one run. The Mets left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Mets only run came on a long sacrifice fly to center field by David Wright that scored Santana. The Mets haven’t had any offense in the first two games in San Diego. Ryan Church didn’t play again tonight, missing two of the last three games. Apparently, the concussion must still be bothering him.

The Mets have only scored one run in each of the first two games. They fall to 2-3 on this road trip and back to .500 for the season.

Jose Reyes Fielding Problems- Randolph Offers Help

Jose Reyes season has been one of offensive success in recent weeks and defensive mystery. His fielding percentage (.961) is the lowest of his career since 2004 (.957 at SS). That’s when he was in the middle of the horrible transition to second base to make room for Japanese superstar Kaz Matsui.

We now know that Matsui wasn’t a superstar for the New York Mets and Reyes wasn’t a second baseman. But Reyes has been struggling defensively this season often on plays that appear to be routine. There’s been speculation that Reyes is dissatisfied with his four year/$23.25 million contract. That may be a logical assertion. Fellow infielder David Wright has a six year/$55 million contract. In my opinion, Reyes is a far more dynamic player at a position that requires more defensive skill. I’d be unhappy about the contract as well. The Mets go up against the San Diego Padres for the second of a four game series tonight. It’s another late night game that’s tough to stay awake for. I’m still dejected from the way last night’s game ended… a hit batter to bring the winning run home in the bottom of the ninth. Unbelievable!

  • Willie Randolph is thinking about giving David Wright a day off. He’s played every inning of every game so far. I’m not so concerned about that. He’s a young guy and shouldn’t have a problem playing nearly every game. Wright played in 160 games last season. Read Bart Hubbach’s column at the NY Post.
  • Ryan Church played in last night’s game after asking for a day off in San Francisco on Wednesday. He said that he felt winded after light pinch hitting duty for a week and a half after his concussion in Atlanta.
  • Mets second baseman Luis Castillo is happy to be going up against Padres starter Randy Wolf tonight. He has a history of hitting him hard to the tune of .425/ .465/ .650. Read Marty Noble’s column at MLB.com.

Mets Lose To Padres In Ninth 2-1

I’ll cut right to the chase. Scott Schoenweiss blew up in the bottom of the ninth. And I was getting worried that Aaron Heilman was warming up in the bullpen. Little did I know…

Schoenweiss walked two, then an intentional walk, and then hit Paul McAnulty with a pitch to bring home the winning run. What a horrible way to lose a game.

Jose Reyes made a couple of really nice plays in the field. He also went 2 for 3 with two stolen bases.

Mike Pelfrey was pitching out of trouble in most of his six innings. He gave up eight hits and three walks while only giving up one run. His line looks better than he actually pitched.

The Mets only run came in the sixth inning when Jose Reyes singled, stole second base, then scored on a single by David Wright.

Terrible loss. The Mets go to 2-2 on the road trip and one game over .500.

Santana Does It Again; Mets Over Dodgers 6-1

Johan Santana (7-3) is proving his value to the Mets this season. He put the hammer down on the Los Angeles Dodgers to take three out of four in the series. Santana gave up a run in the first inning, and then cruised through 7.2 innings for the win.

Ryan Church was back in the lineup and doesn’t appear to be feeling any ill effects from his concussion. He was 3 for 4 with two RBI’s a double and a home run in the third inning. Nice comeback!

Carlos Beltran also hit a home run in the five run third inning. It was his second game in a row with a homer, and also another long shot off the scoreboard in right center.

David Wright had a good game going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and a stolen base.

The Mets leave for San Francisco tonight for a three game series.

Fernando Tatis Proving Late And Close Ability

Fernando Tatis has electrified Mets fans with his offensive ability over his short stint with the Mets, 19 days to be exact. In that time he’s managed two game winning hits in the last four days. His “late and close” hitting has been impressive and New York Mets manager Willie Randolph sure needed it.

Randolph was called on the carpet by the Mets owners less than a week ago for running the highest paid team in the National League into a sub .500 record. I don’t know the exact contents of that conversation or if an ultimatum was given to Randolph. But I’m sure that one was was implied by the Mets owner. Randolph was left needing a player to make a difference quickly. I doubt that he ever thought that player would be Tatis.

Tatis has been in and out of the major leagues for the last five years and spent the entire 2007 season at Triple-A New Orleans. His presence has been felt like a bolt of lightning striking energy into an unispired Mets team over the last three weeks. He came through with a run scoring single off Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jonathan Broxton yesterday in the eighth inning. And he hit a two run double on Wednesday against the Florida Marlins to secure a 7-6 win in the bottom of the 12th inning. The Mets had fallen behind by one run in the top of the 12th. Mets Come Back In Eighth For 3-2 Win

I thought this game was completely out of hand for the Mets through seven innings. Chad Billingsley was cruising. He only gave up four hits and three walks through seven. But he had thrown 109 pitches and Joe Torre decided to take him out of the game. And that was all that the Mets needed.

After doing nothing offensively for the first seven innings, the Mets came alive against Jonathan Broxton. David Wright doubled and Carlos Beltran hit a huge home run off the scoreboard in right. It was about half way up the board like one of the old Darryl Strawberry shots. Carlos Delgado then singled, and Nick Evans pinch ran for him. Again, Fernando Tatis came up with a big hit to score Evans. I can’t believe how clutch Tatis has been.

Mike Pelfrey had a decent game overall even though it was a rough start. The Dodgers scored one in the first and one in the fourth. His line ended up looking good though, two runs over seven innings is a nice start. He looked like he was taking something off the fastball to try to throw more strikes, at least initially. We’ll see if it was enough to keep him on the roster when Pedro Martinez comes off on Tuesday.
