Beltran Slams Marlins; Mets Win 5-4
This game had some incredible moments in the ninth… The Mets put together a four run rally with two outs in the ninth. So much for the Mets not putting up offense late in the game. Then Luis Ayala almost gave the lead back in the bottom of the frame. What a game!
The Mets went into the ninth inning down 2-1 against the Marlins closer Kevin Gregg. Quickly down to their last out, the Mets put together singles by Luis Castillo, and David Wright, Carlos Delgado was hit by a pitch, and Carlos Beltran blasted the first pitch he saw into the right field seats. It was only the Mets second grand slam this season but couldn’t have been more timely.
After another solid game by Oliver Perez, 6 IP and 1 ER, Brian Stokes and Joe Smith held the Marlins lead in check going into the ninth. After Beltran’s fireworks, Luis Ayala the de facto closer came in to shut the door. He barely did it… giving up four hits and two runs in the inning. He also left two men on base and had several balls hit very hard that went foul. Talk about sweating out the ninth.
It turned out the be a great win though because the Phillies lost and the Mets extend their lead to 2 games in the NL East.
On Deck- August 29- Mets at Marlins [Game 1]
New York Mets (74-60 Road: 33-35) at Florida Marlins (68-66 Home:35-31) 7:10pm
Oliver Perez (9-7 4.00) vs. Chris Volstad (4-3 3.42)
What to watch: Volstad is the Marlins hot-shot rookie pitcher that’s looked pretty good in eight starts this season. Perez didn’t pitch all that well in his last start at Shea against the Astros. But he’s had a great second half this season. It should be a good match up in Miami.

Mets Roughed Up By Marlins In 8-2 Loss
Mike Pelfrey didn’t have it today at all. It was one of his worst starts in quite a while. He gave up six runs over 4.2 innings. Carlos Muniz didn’t fare much better in the sixth inning either. He gave up home runs to Luis Gonzalez and Mike Jacobs.
The Mets had virtually no offense either managing only six hits and two walks. Jose Reyes was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. That’s pretty much all of the offense.
The Mets end up winning two out of three in the series against the Marlins.
On Deck- August 10- Marlins at Mets [Game 3]
Florida Marlins (61-56 Road: 28-30) at New York Mets (62-54 Home: 36-21) 1:10pm
Josh Johnson (2-0 3.34) vs. Mike Pelfrey (10-7 3.85)
TV: CW11 Radio: WFAN
What to watch: The Mets get a shot at sweeping the Marlins today. Johnson pitched six shutout innings for a win at Philly in his last start. Pelfrey went 6.2 innings for a win against the Padres in his last start. This is a really good pitching match up and a beautiful day for those of you with tickets for the game. Enjoy!

Mets Power Blasts Marlins 8-6
The Mets got home runs from Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, and Daniel Murphy’s first career long ball. David Wright and Beltran both had three hits in the game. The offense was on tonight big time. The Mets had 13 hits and a walk but only left four men on base.
Brian Stokes spot start was pretty successful. He went 5.2 innings giving up four runs. He’s got a mid-90’s fastball but it’s straight as an arrow. He also throws a lot balls high in the strike zone. It’ll be interesting to see if the Mets keep him around in the bullpen.
Joe Smith was ugly out of the bullpen in the eighth inning giving up two runs on three hits and only getting one out. But Aaron Heilman got his second save in as many days in another impressive inning.
The Phillies won tonight so the Mets hold even at one game back.
On Deck- August 9- Marlins at Mets [Game 2]
Florida Marlins (61-55 Road: 28-29) at New York Mets (61-54 Home: 35-21) 7:10pm
Scott Olsen (6-6 3.87) vs. Brian Stokes (0-0 0.00)
What to watch: The Mets bullpen needs to get their act together quickly. Stokes is a Triple-A call up making a spot start. The bullpen needs to be prepared to get through 4+ innings tonight. Olsen has pitched some good games for the Marlins recently but hasn’t won a game since July 19th. With a win today, the Mets could win this important divisional series.
