Post-Game: Mets 3 – Marlins 2 May 31, 2009

John Maine was looking better than he has all season, cruising through 6 innings without giving up a run. He was warming up for the seventh inning and felt sick to his stomach. He left the game with the same stomach ailment that’s caused Gary Sheffield and Carlos Beltran to lose time in the past couple of weeks.

Angel Pagan had a nice RBI double in the third inning down the left field line that scored Wilson Valdez. In the fourth inning he was chasing down a fly ball in center field and came up lame. He had to leave the game with a groin pull. It’s starting to seem like there are more Mets that are hurt than playing right now.

J.J. Putz struggled in the eighth inning and was pulled for Bobby Parnell. Putz ended up giving up 2 runs in 0.1 innings, no thanks to the RBI single that Parnell gave up to Hanely Ramirez to make the game close at 3-2. But Francisco Rodriguez continues to be perfect getting his 14th save.

The Mets finish their short home stand at 5-1 and head to Pittsburgh to begin a four game series tomorrow night.

Red Sox 12 – Mets 5 May 24, 2009

Tim Redding was doing pretty well until he lost it completely in the fifth inning. He ended up giving up 6 runs in 4.2 innings. Redding didn’t get any help from the bullpen either. Especially Brian Stokes couldn’t get anyone out. He gave up 5 runs in 1.1 innings. Overall, it was a poorly pitched game by the Mets.

The Mets offense was highlighted by Ramon Castro (2 for 4) who hit a solo homer in the second inning. They put up 5 runs but all of them were within the first five innings of the game.

Francisco Rodriguez was ready to pitch again today after being hospitalized yesterday with severe back spasms. He didn’t get into the game but should be ready for tomorrow night.

The Mets finish the long road trip at 5-5. Not bad for some tough teams and a west coast swing.

Mets K-Rod In Boston Hospital

Francisco RodriguezBefore last night’s game Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez was taken by ambulance to a Boston hospital. According to several media reports, he was running before the game when his back tightened up. He was worked on by a chiropractor in the visitors locker room and the situation became worse.

Several beat reporters wrote that K-Rod collapsed in the locker room and started crying. He was shielded from reporters and an ambulance was called.

J.J. Putz closed out the game against the Red Sox. We haven’t heard what the long-term situation is yet. But it doesn’t look good.

The only good news is that the Mets have Putz, an experienced closer. Unlike last season when Billy Wagner was lost for the season with an elbow injury, the Mets do have some good arms in the bullpen. The season isn’t totally lost because the closer is unavailable for some period of time.

Mets 3 – Red Sox 2 May 23, 2009

The Mets pulled out a dramatic win in the ninth inning capped by a 2-run homer by Omir Santos off Jonathan Papelbon for the win. The home run was reviewed on video by the umpires. It just barely made it over the line at the top of the Green Monster, but it was a home run.

Mike Pelfrey went toe-to-toe with Josh Beckett for 7 innings giving up only 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk. He looked very good all night, both runs for the Sox were scored in the first inning and Pelfrey shut them out for the next six.

J.J. Putz closed the game because Francisco Rodriguez suffered serious back spasms before the game. He was taken to the hospital in Boston for an examination.

It was a great win in several respects for the Mets. Not the least important is that it was just a dramatic win of a great game in itself. But it also was the fifth win for the Mets on this ten game road trip, which solidifies this as a successful trip. If you can go on the road (and the west coast) and not lose any ground in the standings then you’re doing pretty well.

Mets 4- Nationals 3 April 24, 2009

42409Johan Santana was fantastic again. It’s hard to believe that a pitcher can be this good consistently. He went 6 innings giving up 1 run on 6 hits and had 10 strikeouts, including the first six consecutive batters. He’s totally in the zone this season.

The Mets put together 4 runs over four different innings. The team left 13 runners on base including 9 in scoring position. That continues to be a problem. The offensive leader tonight was Fernando Tatis. He was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored. It was good to see him get going tonight. We haven’t seen enough of him so far this season.

Francisco Rodriguez did give up a 2-run homer to Jesus Flores in the ninth. But he hadn’t pitched in six straight days, so I’ll cut him some slack on that. He didn’t look sharp at all.

The Nationals are always good to play to end a losing streak and that was the case tonight.
