Phillies 2 – Mets 0 July 5, 2009

The Phillies finished off the sweep against the lifeless Mets today in Philly. Once again, Johan Santana was good but the Mets had nothing else to back him up. Santana went 7 i innings giving up a leadoff homer to Jimmy Rollins and a solo shot to Chase Utley in the sixth. He only allowed 3 hits in the game.

The Mets got shutout and only had 4 hits so there isn’t much offense to talk about. Luis Castillo was 2 for 2 and Santana had one of the hits. That tells you how miserable the Mets offense is right now. The Mets only scored 3 runs in the entire series in Philly.

The Mets are off tomorrow with the Dodgers coming to town for three games starting Tuesday.

Johan Santana (9-6 3.34) vs. Joe Blanton (4-4 5.08)

TV: WPIX  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets need this one to avoid the sweep in Philly before coming home to face the Dodgers. Santana has lost three of his last four decisions, and today would be an excellent opportunity for him to turn things around. Blanton hasn’t pitched that badly for the Phils but he hasn’t won a game since June 1. The Phillies have lost the five games that Blanton started. Hopefully, this lines up as a win for the Mets.

Brewers 6 – Mets 3 June 30, 2009

The Mets went down in defeat for the fifth straight game. Even with Johan Santana on the mound, the Mets played one of their worst games and suffered one of the most embarrassing losses of the season.

The game looked great in the first inning with David Wright hitting a 2-run homer to get things started. But the Mets imploded in the fourth when Santana walked the Brewers pitcher, Fernando Martinez did a face plant in the outfield on a routine fly ball, and the Mets kicked the ball around the field like little leaguers on a play at the plate. The Brewers took a 5-2 lead and the game was gone.

Santana flipped out in the dugout between innings but he was more to blame than anyone. It was his walk of the pitcher that got things started for the Brewers and his wild error throw to third after the play at home. I don’t know who he was yelling at but he should look at himself in this case.

Martinez ended up hitting his first major league homer in the ninth but it was another ugly loss. Pitching coach Dan Warthen was thrown out of the game for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Jim Wolf. The Mets have had problems with Wolf before this season so I wasn’t surprised to see them getting on him throughout the game.

After the game Jerry Manuel had a 30 minute closed-door meeting with the players. He said afterward that it was a “family meeting” and the purpose was to make sure that they understand that they have what it takes to win. Oddly, he just told reporters days ago that the Mets need to trade for a hitter.

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: Burns has started one game for the Brewers and got bombed by the Twins. This is the game the Mets need to win in this series. Santana’s last two starts have been very good, so there are no excuses not to win this one.

Game Preview: Cardinals at Mets [Game 71] June 25, 2009

Chris Carpenter (5-1 1.53) vs. Johan Santana (8-5 3.22)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: This is another one of those premier pitching match-up’s that you get a few times during the regular season. Carpenter never seems to lose a beat when he misses extended time due to injuries and this season is another example of that. Santana hasn’t been his best over the last month and a half. I’d like to see him start to return to his early season form. The Mets need that badly with the Triple-A lineup that they’re running out there now. Gary Sheffield is likely available for emergencies today after having a cortisone shot in his knee yesterday.

Rays 3 – Mets 1 June 20, 2009

After struggling (relatively) for the last month, Johan Santana came back with another excellent start. He went 7.1 innings giving up 2 runs on 98 pitches. But the game was stopped because of rain in the eighth and that was it for Santana with the Mets losing 2-1. Now that Santana is pitching well, the Mets aren’t scoring behind him again. The guy can’t win…

The Mets went very quietly today only getting 4 hits in the game. There was no offense whatsoever. The only run came on an RBI double to right by Omir Santos in the second inning. That’s it.

The Rays even up the series and they play the rubber game tomorrow afternoon.

James Shields (5-5 3.52) vs. Johan Santana (8-4 3.29)

TV: FOX  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: Fox Sports gets a good pitching match-up for this nationally televised game. Hopefully, the rain will hold out for long enough to get the game in. Shields has lost his last three road starts and is pitching to a 4.15 ERA on the road. Shields, like Santana, is a changeup pitcher and told the Tampa Tribune this week that he’s been looking forward to going up against Santana. The Mets are trying to get Santana back on track today. He’s been on a rough stretch for about a month now.
