Easley Homer In 10 Caps 5-4 Mets Win

image The Mets made Jerry Manuel’s first win as manager a dramatic one. David Wright tied the game in the ninth inning with an RBI single scoring Jose Reyes.  It was only K-Rod’s second blown save of the year.  Damion Easley won it in the tenth inning with a solo home run off Justin Speier.

Oliver Perez had what’s come to be a typical start for him.  He was pitching well until giving up three runs in the fifth inning.  The middle innings seem to be a problem that he can’t overcome.  His final line was six innings pitched giving up four runs on nine hits and three walks to go along with two strikeouts. He was wild at times and doing some crazy hesitation motion like Asian pitchers in the sixth inning.  It’s hard to understand what’s going through his head sometimes.

Reyes had a huge offensive game going 3 for 5 with three runs scored, one of those hits being a triple.  Carlos Delgado also had a solo homer in the fourth inning off Jon Garland.  Wright was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI’s including the critical RBI hit in the top of the ninth.

The bullpen was clean through the last four innings of the game. Joe Smith, Scott Schoenweiss, Duaner Sanchez, and Billy Wagner all looked very good tonight.

The Mets win 2 of 3 in Los Angeles against a very good Angels team. The team has an off day tomorrow before beginning a weekend series with the Rockies in Colorado.

Video: Mets Players On Willie Randolph

The Mets “core” players talk about the decision to fire Willie. Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, and David Wright do the talking. Beltran is particularly insightful about the players causing Willie to lose his job.

Mets Commit 3 Errors In Loss To Angels 6-1

Johan Santana didn’t have it tonight in Jerry Manuel’s first game as the Mets manager. Jose Reyes was hurt in the first inning and showed up Manuel when he was pulled from the game. The game felt like a resounding thud for the Mets.

There was virtually no offense in the game for the Mets against Jon Lackey. Damion Easley scored in the first inning on a double play ground out by David Wright. That was it for the Mets offense.

Santana pitched six innings giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out five. Aaron Heilman pitched a clean seventh inning and Claudio Vargas gave up one more run in the eighth.

The Mets were sloppy in the field with errors by Carlos Delgado, Marlon Anderson, and Luis Castillo.

Jose Reyes Leaves Game With Hamstring Problem

IMG_0116 Jose Reyes led off the game against the Los Angeles Angels with a single up the middle. A great way to start Jerry Manuel’s tenure as manager of the Mets. But it quickly went south.

Reyes pulled up lame at first base with a problem with his left leg. Mets trainer Ray Ramirez and Jerry Manuel came out to talk to Reyes. Manuel decided to play it safe and replace Reyes with Damion Easley at shortstop, the logical thing to do.

Reyes responded by having a fit on the field worthy of a little leaguer. At first he refused to come out of the game. Then he threw hit helmet in front of the Mets dugout and pulled up his shirt on the way into the clubhouse.Jerry Manuel went into the clubhouse at the end of the inning and spent quite a bit of time in there. I’m sure that we’ll here more on this story tomorrow.

Beltran 2 HR Powers Mets 9-6 Over Angels

Carlos Beltran hit two solo homers, one in the first and one in the third inning. Mike Pelfrey got his first win since April 15.

Pelfrey’s line was six innings pitched giving up eight hits and two walks. He had no strikeouts. He gave up six runs but he was shaky in the seventh and didn’t get any outs. Pedro Feliciano came in to relieve in the seventh and was terrible giving up two RBI hits. He only got one out in the seventh.

Aaron Heilman came into the game in the seventh after Feliciano was ineffective. I thought that the Angels would break it open at that point but Heilman locked down the inning with two strikeouts.

Billy Wagner was a little shaky in the ninth inning again. He gave up a hit and a walk but got out of the inning with a line drive to Jose Reyes for a double play at second base.

Reyes was 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and a stolen base as well.

Oliver Perez Great As Mets Win Big 7-1

Manager Willie Randolph needed a win tonight and he got one thanks to Oliver Perez. He went seven innings giving up one run on three hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. The bullpen actually did the job tonight too. Scott Schoenweiss pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Duaner Sanchez a perfect ninth.

Things were dicey early when Josh Hamilton hit a long homer to left field off Perez in the first inning. But Perez recovered nicely.

The offensive stars were Jose Reyes who went 2 for 4, scored two runs and had a stolen base. Perez also had a two RBI single to left in the sixth inning that drew applause from the Mets dugout.
