Jose Reyes the Yankees and Mets Fans

I had been reading up on the many different teams that Jose Reyes may be a good fit for joining in August and also in 2012. But the only one that got my interest was anĀ article in the NY Daily News anointing Reyes the next Yankee shortstop.

So I’m thinking ahead to the worst case scenario and wondering what would happen here in NY if Reyes took over for Derek Jeter at shortstop either this year or next? It’s a logical “baseball” move but you could be damaging two franchises at the same time. This isn’t Darryl Strawberry or Dwight Gooden playing in the twilight of their careers being given one last shot by the Yankees. This is one of the best shortstops in the game, in his prime, crossing over to the dark side!

What Would Yankee Fans Think?

Yankee fans will not be happy if their beloved captain is benched in favor of Jose Reyes. Ok, Jose is clearly better right now but Jeter has meant so much more than Reyes ever will mean to the Mets in the last 10 years. At a very early age Jeter played with professionalism, class, and poise while keeping his head and his teammates heads in every game. It’s this discipline at an early age that allowed Jeter to be one of the greats of baseball who can show off 4 World Series rings. It’s this same discipline I wish Jose had.

At 28 years old and with only 10 weeks of prime Jose Reyes baseball to judge him by this year, Jose is clearly playing for a contract. He may be playing up the fact that he has finally matured but we won’t know until he plays at this level for a full year and not in a contract year.

Can the Yankees afford him? Yes, most definitely. Would they want him though? Yankee fans would murder Reyes for a typical Reyes boneheaded bobble or for watching the ball roll under his glove or even getting picked off of first base because he was working on seeing his reflection in one of his gold chains.

Yankee fans would boo him incessantly for every little mistake, he would never live down Jeter’s legacy, even if he won a ring or two and he would have to get a haircut. Odds are if the Yankees were to get Reyes it would do more harm than good with their fans but would that be enough to stop them from pulling the trigger on such a trade? Mets 4 – Braves 3 June 14, 2011

The Mets got another good start from Jon Niese. He went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs. He was really on with 4 strikeouts, no walks, and allowing only 5 hits. He did it with Phil Cuzzi behind the plate too who had a ridiculously small strike zone. The bullpen was solid except for Jason Isringhausen allowing a solo homer to Dan Uggla. Other than that they worked pretty clean.

The Mets offense jumped on Jair Jurrgens early surprisingly. Jurrgens was having trouble with the Cuzzi strike zone and looked rattled when he gave up a run in the top of the first. As usual, it was a monster game for Jose Reyes. He went 3 for 5 with 2 runs, 1 RBI, and 2 stolen bases. These huge games are starting to become a daily occurrence. It’s really incredible to watch.

The Mets take the first game of the three game series.

The final score was a rout but it was a actually a pitchers dual that was scoreless until the seventh inning. The Mets beat up the Pirates pitching at the end with another huge game from Jose Reyes. He was 3 for 5 with a solo homer in the ninth inning. His average is up to .346 now and he’s playing better than ever in the final season of his Mets contract.

Chris Capuano also had a big game throwing 7 scoreless innings and getting the win. He only allowed 3 hits and 2 walks and was firmly in control throughout the game.

The Mets are up 2-1 in the series with one game left tomorrow night in Pittsburgh.

In the week’s Weekly Mets Report video with Kerel Cooper of On The Black we talk about last night’s game against the Pirates. The disappointing loss led to a discussion of Daniel Murphy and where, if anywhere, he fits in to the Mets defensively.

We also talk about the curious lineup that Terry Collins ran out there with Lucas Duda at first base and Justin Turner on the bench. The discussion is about where we see the Mets lineup going in the long-term.

We also talk about Ruben Tejada’s offense and how we could be seeing a lot more of him at shortstop in the second half of the season.

The Mets lost tonight despite a complete game from R.A. Dickey. He went 8 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks. It was another gutty performance on a bad foot. He didn’t deserve the loss and really didn’t deserve to give up all of the runs as earned. Andrew McCutchen doubled in the third inning on a play that should have been made by Daniel Murphy at third base. Two runs scored and that was the difference in the game. It was another example of how you can’t hide Murphy in the field and it cost the Mets a game.

The Mets were hitting well tonight with 10 hits and 4 walks in the game. Jose Reyes had 2 more hits raising his season average to .341. And Ruben Tejada was second in the order and went 2 for 4 raising his average to .338.

Mets 4 – Brewers 1 June 9, 2011

The Mets took the series with a win in the rubber game tonight behind a huge game by Jon Niese. He was throwing no-hits through three innings and went 7.2 innings allowing only the one run. He ended up allowing only 3 hits and had 8 strikeouts. The curve ball was working again. He really has a great feel for that pitch right now. K-Rod came in to get the four out save and wrapped up the game allowing only 1 hit.

Jason Bay was benched tonight and the lineup had much better continuity without him. He’s an automatic out right now and a major rally killer. So it was good to see him get some time off. The only thing keeping him on this roster right now is his big contract.

The Mets offense had an all-around solid performance. They had 11 hits and 3 walks in the game but they did have 11 strikeouts. Surprisingly, Jose Reyes was 0 for 5. It seems like a long time since he’s had a 0-for.

The Mets head to Pittsburgh for a four game series starting tomorrow.

Chris Capuano was victorious in his return to Milwaukee tonight. He did a great job again and, this time, got just enough run support to get a win. He went 6 innings allowing only a Prince Fielder solo shot to center field. The bullpen cleaned up with three perfect innings. Pedro Beato, Jason Isringhausen, and K-Rod didn’t allow a batter to reach base after taking over for Capuano. It was exactly how the Mets would have drawn it up.

The Mets didn’t do a lot on offense. They only had 5 hits and 5 walks in the game. But Jose Reyes came through with a 2-run triple in the seventh inning. He may have scored on an infield play but got thrown out at the plate and didn’t slide.

It’s a good start to the three game series in Milwaukee against a hot Brewers team.
