Mets 8 – Pirates 4 May 10, 2009

The Mets got their seventh consecutive win and their third consecutive series sweep today. The team is really clicking now. Livan Hernandez had some good numbers on the day going 6 innings giving up only 2 runs. But he was teetering on the edge of trouble for much of the early going. The Pirates inept offense is the only thing that kept him from having serious trouble.

The Mets offense kept plugging away again today with Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, and Omir Santos having 2 hits apiece. But they did leave 17 runners on base, a common theme this season that could bite them against better competition than the Pirates.

Of note in the game was manager Jerry Manuel back at the reins after serving a one game suspension. Also, Reyes had his 10th stolen base of the season which was also the 300th of his young career.

The Mets now stand alone in first place in the National League East, one game ahead of the Florida Marlins.

Game Preview: Pirates at Mets [Game 30] May 10, 2009

pirates-logo2Pittsburgh Pirates (12-18 Road: 5-11) at New York Mets (16-13 Home: 10-6)  1:10 pm

Ian Snell (1-4 4.50) vs. Livan Hernandez (2-1 5.53)

TV: WPIX   RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Pirates have lost seven straight games and the Mets have won six straight. The Mets have a chance at their third consecutive series sweep today as well. For the most part, Snell hasn’t pitched badly this season if you look at his game log. He’s taken a few tough losses when he pitched well. Hernandez has been up and down for the Mets. But he pitched an excellent game against the Braves on Tuesday.

Mets 4- Braves 3 May 5, 2009

The Mets complete the 2-game sweep of the Braves in Atlanta tonight. That was a close one that shouldn’t have been as close as it was. Livan Hernandez was outstanding tonight going 6.1 innings giving up only 1 run. He only threw 74 pitches on the night. It was a really good game for him. He had a nice sacrifice bunt and threw out a runner at third as well. Great game for him.

David Wright had two hits again tonight but still looks like he has a wicked upper cut to me. But if he can keep hitting I guess it really doesn’t matter. Ramon Castro was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and an RBI. He’s been making a case to get the bulk of the playing time at catcher until Brian Schneider gets back from the disabled list.

The real fun came at the end of the game. Carlos Delgado had a nice 2 RBI single with the bases loaded to make the score 4-1. It turned out that they needed those runs. Delgado dropped a routine pop up with 2 outs and 2 runners on. That kept the inning alive and the Braves scored two runs off Francisco Rodriguez. But it wasn’t enough to avoid the sweep as the Mets were able to get out of the jam.

Game Preview: Mets at Braves [Game 25] May 5, 2009

Atlanta Braves logoNew York Mets (11-13 Road: 5-7) at Atlanta Braves (11-14 Home: 5-8) 7:10 pm

Livan Hernandez (1-1 6.75) vs. Kenshin Kawakami (1-3 7.06)

TV: SNY RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Mets go for the short series sweep tonight in ATL. Kawakami was one of the Braves big pitching signings this offseason and has been a big disappointment so far. He got rocked in Cincinnati in his last start giving up 8 runs in 4.1 innings. Hernandez has been what we expected when the Mets signed him, very mediocre. We could be looking at a high-scoring game tonight.

Marlins 7- Mets 4 April 28, 2009

42809Sorry for the late post on this one. Livan Hernandez put up a respectable start last night. It’s pretty much what you would expect from a fifth starter. He got into the sixth inning and gave up 3 runs, 2 of then earned. If he could do that consistently, the Mets would be in good shape this season.

On offense, Alex Cora had 2 hits, 2 runs, and 1 RBI subbing in for Luis Castillo. I thought it was interesting that Jerry Manuel put Cora at the top of the lineup when he always keeps Castillo at the bottom of the lineup. Manuel really has no faith in Castillo. David Wright has a nice 2 out RBI in the fifth inning. Hopefully, that will lead to good things for him.

Sean Green lost the game for the Mets in the seventh when he gave up 2 hits and 2 walks, which turned into 4 runs. Green has been pretty good generally this season but this was his second bad game raising his ERA to 8.49. We’ll have to keep an eye on that.

Ricky Nolasco (1-2 6.86) vs. Livan Hernandez (1-1 7.31)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: Both starting pitchers are having ugly seasons so far. We haven’t received word yet if Carlos Delgado will be able to play tonight. He saw a doctor today after experiencing pain in his hip. Also, Luis Castillo probably won’t play after having back spasms yesterday.

Cardinals 12- Mets 8 April 23, 2009

42309The final score actually wasn’t indicative of the beating that the Cardinals handed the Mets today to complete the 3-game sweep. Livan Hernandez was bad again and this game was over by the sixth inning. The Mets starting pitchers, beside Johan Santana, have an ERA over 7. That’s all that you need to know about the Mets current four game losing streak.

Albert Pujols hit two homers today for the Cardinals. Ryan Church and Carlos Beltran hit meaningless homers in garbage time for the Mets as well. Beltran’s average is up to .404 for the season.

The Mets go home and hope to get right against the Washington Nationals.
