Game Preview: Rays at Mets [Game 67] June 21, 2009

Rays logoTampa Bay Rays (36-34 Road: 15-22) at New York Mets (34-32 Home: 19-12)   1:10 pm

Jeff Niemann (6-4 4.21) vs. Mike Pelfrey (5-2 4.56)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Rays play the rubber game of the series today before the Cardinals come to town for a four game set. Niemann is a pitcher that appears to be pretty consistent from game to game. He isn’t outstanding but neither is Pelfrey. Niemann is going to pitch a decent game and likely won’t get rocked, especially by the Mets struggling offense.

Mets 6 – Orioles 4 June 16, 2009

The Mets got a solid start from Mike Pelfrey. He cruised through the first four innings easily. And I thought he was on his way going deep into the game. He ran into a little trouble in the fifth inning and some more in the sixth, giving up 2 runs. It seemed like he ran out of gas which is surprising for this time of the season. But his start was good enough to keep the Mets in the game.

Sean Green went 1.2 innings of scoreless ball. He’s been fantastic lately and hasn’t given up a run since May 15. He had about a month, starting at the end of April, where he was very inconsistent but he’s really found himself.

The Mets offense benefitted from 3 Orioles errors. But give them credit that they were able to make the Orioles pay for the errors. The Mets had 3 unearned runs in the game. Alex Cora was 3 for 5 hitting leadoff again. It was good to see him get something going. He was 1 for his last 15 at-bats coming into the game.

orioles-logoNew York Mets (32-29 Road: 14-18)  at Baltimore Orioles (27-36 Home: 19-16) 7:05 pm

Mike Pelfrey (4-2 4.68) vs. Jeremy Guthrie (4-6 5.52)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Orioles are in last place in the AL East and have lost 3 of their last 5 games. Guthrie has been up and down, with more down than up recently. The O’s have lost the last three games that Guthrie started. Pelfrey pitched pretty well in his last start against the Phillies. But he was victimized by a David Wright error that allowed 2 unearned runs to score on him.

Mets K-Rod, Yankees Bruney Separated On Field

boxingAccording to several Mets beat reporters, K-Rod and Brian Bruney nearly came to blows after an argument in left field during batting practice this morning. They were separated by Mike Pelfrey and others before punches were thrown.

The Subway Series has some real juice now!

Phillies 5 – Mets 4 June 10, 2009

The Mets ended up losing this one in 11 innings on a Chase Utleyhome run, his second of the game, off Bobby Parnell. But the good news is that Mike Pelfrey found his form and pitched a very good game. He went 6 innings giving up 4 runs (2 earned). If not for a costly error picking up a ground ball by David Wright, Pelfrey’s line would’ve been much better. A side note is that light-hitting Pelfrey was 2 for 3 with a double off the left field wall and an RBI.

The Mets consistently had opportunities offensively but left 16 runners on base. Compare that to the 5 LOB that the Phillies had. Wright and Omir Santos had 3 hits apiece leading the Mets offense.

The Mets and Phillies will play the rubber game of the series tonight at Citi Field.

Game Preview: Phillies at Mets [Game 57] June 10, 2009

phillies-logoPhiladelphia Phillies (33-23 Road: 21-9) at New York Mets (31-25 Home: 18-9)  7:10 pm

Cole Hamels (4-2 4.40) vs. Mike Pelfrey (4-2 4.85)

TV: SNY  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: Hamels is coming off a complete game shutout in his last start. While Pelfrey is coming off the worst start of his career. The Phils haven’t lost a game started by Hamels since May 14. The Mets have won 2 of Pelfrey’s last 4 starts. On paper, this one appears to favor the Phils but they still have to play the game.

Pirates 11 – Mets 6 June 4, 2009

The Pirates completed the sweep of the Mets returning the favor for the Mets sweep at Citi Field. Mike Pelfrey was absolutely awful with the worst performance by a Mets starter in two years. He went 3.2 innings giving up 9 runs (8 earned from a Daniel Murphy error). Pelfrey walked 4 and gave up 9 hits, just an abysmal job.

The Mets offense was pretty good putting up 6 runs, which is normally enough to win a game. Carlos Beltran back from the flu had 2 hits, a double and a home run. David Wright also had 2 hits after his second prolonged slump of the early season. Fernando Martinez had 2 hits as well with Ryan Church looming to come off the disabled list on Sunday. Martinez is trying to make a case to stay in the big leagues.

After the game Beltran told reporters that he is embarrassed by the Mets display in Pittsburgh in the three game series. He didn’t call anyone out in particular, which is good, but someone had to say something after this kind of disaster.
