Forbes ranks the New York Mets second, behind the Yankees, in overall value of the club at $824 million.  The team also had an operating profit of $32.9 million last year. We shouldn’t complain about big contracts like Santana’s and Beltran’s when the team is still making money is the moral of the story. Read the full column here.

Brewers Beat Mets 9-7 To Take Game, Series

New York Mets relief pitcher Jorge Sosa during a Mets/Detroit Tigers spring training game at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida.Image via WikipediaThe Brewers took the rubber game of the series in a poorly pitched game by both teams. Jorge Sosa took the loss for the Mets after entering the game in the fifth and pitching 1.2 innings and giving up 2 runs.

Both starting pitchers were terrible today. If there was a way to give Oliver Perez and Jeff Suppan a loss, this would be the game to do it.

The Brewers turned an eye popping 5 double plays in the game. For a team with no defense, they were able to shut the Mets down with timely double plays.

David Wright hit his third homer in the game and Brian Schneider was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s. Schneider’s defense was questionable once again today. Although he didn’t have any PB’s or errors, he couldn’t keep the ball in his glove. I’m starting to think there may be something wrong with him, like a hand injury, that we don’t know about.

The Mets are off on Monday and the Nationals come to town on Tuesday after ending their nine game losing streak today against Tom Glavine and the Braves.

Phillies 5 – Mets 2

New York- The Philadelphia Phillies (4-4) came to town and started up where they left off last season. The New York Mets (2-4) were expecting to get their final season in Shea Stadium started with a bang, but it didn’t turn out that way. The Phillies took the first game of a three game series 5-2.

Scott Schoenweiss recorded his first blown save and loss of the season. Carlos Delgado homered early in the game but didn’t help Schoenweis with a throwing error that led to a three run seventh for the Phillies.

Before the game Matt Wise was placed on the 15-day disabled list and Carlos Muniz was called up and pitched the ninth.

Opening Day Photos- Redux

Now that I’m back from Florida I’m able to upload the higher resolution version of my photos. The hotel Internet connection just didn’t have the bandwidth to do that in a reasonable amount of time. Once again, here are my photos from March 31, 2008 at Dolphin Stadium.

Agent: David Wells Waiting For Mets

Picture I took on 5-10-07 08:11, 14 May 2007 . . Chrisjnelson . . 153×252 (82,109 bytes)Image from WikipediaThe Boston Globe reports that David Wells’ agent, Gregg Clifton, is waiting for a call from the D-Backs or Mets. He believes those are the two teams that he could most likely place Wells.

The terrible news of Doug Davis’ thyroid cancer has created an opening in the D-Backs rotation. Pedro Martinez’ hamstring injury has the Mets searching for an answer as well.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Wells come in if he would do a minor league contract with incentives for major league starts. In my mind, he could certainly compete with Tony Armas, Nelson Figueroa, El Duque, and Mike Pelfrey. I haven’t seen anything from the players currently under contract with the Mets that solidifies their position as a replacement for Pedro.

Sure, Wells will be 45 next month and he doesn’t exactly have the greatest workout regimen. I’m making that statement based on my eyesight, not any knowledge of his workout program (if such a program exists). I’d rather see Wells than some of the recent Mets substitute starters like Jose Lima and Brian Lawrence. Both were hit more than a piñata.

It sounds like the Mets are willing to give Nelson Figueroa a shot this coming Friday against the Brewers and I’m fine with that. But if it doesn’t go well, it may be time to give Gregg Clifton a call.
