Mets Sweep Braves With Dramatic 5-4 Victory

The Mets swept the Braves in this three game series with a tremendous win in the bottom of the ninth. David Wright doubled in the inning and Carlos Delgado drove him in with a line drive to left field that Omar Infante lost in the lights.

Pedro Martinez went seven innings giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk. He also had six strikeouts. His first pitch of the game was crushed for a homer by Yunel Escobar. This is the kind of performance that we can expect from Pedro on a regular basis at this point. He’s an average pitcher.

Luis Ayala did a nice job in relief to finish the eighth and cruise through the ninth.

The offense came from Carlos Delgado with a 5 for 5 night. His first five hit game in ten years. He also had three RBI’s including the game winner. David Wright also had three hits including a solo homer in the fifth and the clutch double in the ninth.

The down side is that the Mets left nine runners on base in the game, but a win is a win.

The Phillies lost to the Nationals so the Mets take a 2.5 game lead in the division.

Pedro Solid In Mets 7-4 Win Over Pirates

The Mets won their fifth game in a row behind a stellar pitching performance by Pedro Martinez. It wasn’t the Pedro from 1997 but he had enough off-speed pitches working, especially the change up, to keep the young Pirates hitters off balance. He went seven innings with little trouble until the seventh when he gave up a solo homer to Andy LaRoche. But that was the only run the Pirates plated against Pedro.

The Mets offense got the party started early with a lead off home run by Jose Reyes and three runs coming home in the first inning. Reyes added a triple off the wall in center in the second inning as well. Nick Evans was the only starter without a hit in the game.

The Phillies lost in San Diego so the Mets move to two full games ahead in the NL East.

On Deck- August 16- Mets at Pirates [Game 2]

New York Mets (66-56 Road: 30-33) at Pittsburgh Pirates (55-67 Home: 33-29) 7:05pm

Pedro Martinez (3-3 5.37) vs. Zach Duke (4-10 5.10)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Both starting pitchers have struggled this season. But Pedro pitched a nice game against the Pirates in his last start on Monday at Shea. Look for the Mets to continue their incredible defense they displayed last night. There were defensive highlights happening all over the field. It was great to see that kind of effort against the Pirates, one of the NL’s weak sisters.

What to watch: This is a make up game for a rain out earlier in the season. The Pirates come into New York playing horribly in the worst division in baseball. Their road record is atrocious. Duke has lost six of his last eight starts. Pedro has pitched well in his last three starts. Enjoy the weekday afternoon game.

Mets Lose Sloppy Game To Padres 4-2

The game looked like it might be over early when Pedro Martinez gave up two solo homers in the first inning. But he bounced back to pitch 6.1 innings giving up three runs and only two were earned. It was a good performance for Pedro.

Other than Daniel Murphy the Mets had no solid offense tonight. Murphy was 3 for 5 with a triple and an RBI. The Mets left 10 runners on base in this one.

Eddie Kunz worked the eighth inning and gave up a solo homer. It’s the first homer he’s given up since he was a freshman in college.

David Wright made an error at third and a bonehead play on the bases. It’s the second night in a row he’s made a big mistake on the bases.

The Mets go to three games behind the Phillies with the loss tonight.

On Deck- August 6- Padres at Mets [Game 2]

San Diego Padres (43-70 Road: 18-36) at New York Mets (59-53 Home: 33-20) 7:10pm

C. Baek (3-5 5.12) vs. Pedro Martinez (3-2 6.16)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Pedro’s having a terrible, injury plagued season. But the Mets sure could use him to put up a good game with the bullpen struggling. He isn’t known to go deep into games and that could hurt the Mets without any reliable options in the bullpen right now.
