On Deck- July 27- Cardinals at Mets Game 3

St. Louis Cardinals (58-48 Road: 28-23) at New York Mets (56-48 Home: 31-20) 1:10pm

Kyle Lohse (12-2 3.35) vs. Johan Santana (8-7 3.05)

TV: CW11   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Cardinals rise and shine early this morning to play again after a late game last night. Lohse hasn’t had a bad start since June 25th. Hopefully, that means he’s due. Santana hasn’t lost a game in a month, and has pitched well enough to win many times this season but hasn’t. The Mets offense owes Santana more support than they’ve given him.

Pujols HR Drops Mets 10-8 in 14th Inning

Video Highlights

The game started ugly with Mets spot starter Brandon Knight giving up four runs in the first inning. He settled down to end up working five innings without giving up another run. More importantly, the Mets offense fought back to tie the game up several times. That’s a good sign for a team that sleep-walked through the first 2+ months of the season.

The comebacks weren’t enough to hold off Albert Pujols. He homered in the 14th inning off Aaron Heilman to win the game. But Heilman pitched three innings of relief on 58 pitches. The bullpen was spent and Heilman took the brunt of the workload in extras. You have to give him credit for that, even in a loss.

Several Mets had big offensive games. Jose Reyes went 4 for 8 with 2 2B and his 12th homer. Carlos Delgado went 2 for 6 with 2 HR’s. Fernando Tatis went 3 for 6 with a dramatic HR in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. It’s incredible how many big hits Tatis has had this season. He’s really got a penchant for getting hits in big spots.

The Phillies and Marlins both won so the Mets hold a one game lead in the NL East.

On Deck- July 26- Cards at Mets Game 2

St. Louis Cardinals (57-48 Road: 27-23) at New York Mets (56-47 Home: 31-19) 7:10pm

Joel Pineiro (3-4 4.52) vs. Brandon Knight (0-0 0.00)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are going for their fourth straight win. But they’re relying on Triple-A call up Knight making a spot start for Pedro Martinez. Pineiro’s last two starts haven’t been that good. Hopefully, the Mets can skate by for a game until Pedro gets back.

Mets Top Cards 7-2 For Third Straight Win

Once again Mike Pelfrey was completely in control of the game. He went seven innings on 103 pitches giving up only seven hits and no walks for one run. He raised his season record to 9-6 with the win tonight.

Endy Chavez went 4 for 5 with a run scored tonight. Carlos Delgado hit his 20th homer of the season. And Argenis Reyes hit his first career home run. Of course, the Mets gave him the silent treatment in the dugout after he hit it. Jose Reyes had his twelfth triple of the season going 2 for 5 with 2 RBI’s.

There is some reason for concern though. Duaner Sanchez was terrible again. He faced three batters without getting an out, just as he did in the first game of the Phillies series.

The Phillies lost at home to Atlanta tonight so the Mets move to a 2 game lead in the NL East. And the Mets are now 22-12 under Jerry Manuel. Tonight’s game is the St. Louis Cardinals fifth consecutive loss.

On Deck- July 25- Cardinals at Mets Game 1

St. Louis Cardinals (57-47 Road: 27-22) at New York Mets (55-47 Home: 30-19) 7:10pm

Mitchell Boggs (3-1 6.59) vs. Mike Pelfrey (8-6 3.81)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Cardinals just lost four straight games in Milwaukee after winning four straight in San Diego. The Cardinals have dropped to four games behind the Cubs in the NL Central. Boggs’ last start was against the Mets on July 3rd when he got rocked for 11 runs (10 earned) over six innings. Pelfrey’s last start in Cincinnati was rough giving up five runs over seven innings. But he hasn’t lost a game since May 26th.
