Revised Starting Pitching Order

The rainout in Atlanta last night caused the Mets to revise their starting pitching order. The new order is:

  • Sat. 4/5- John Maine vs. Tim Hudson
  • Sun. 4/6- Johan Santana vs. Tom Glavine
  • Tues. 4/8- Jamie Moyer vs. Oliver Perez
  • Wed. 4/9- Kyle Kendrick vs. Mike Pelfrey
  • Thur. 4/10- Adam Eaton vs. John Maine

After the Phillies series, the Brewers come to town next Friday. Everyone with tickets for opening day at Shea can breathe a sigh of relief that Oliver Perez is pitching instead of Mike Pelfrey. I agree with the decision to skip Pelfrey’s spot and keep Santana on his regular day tomorrow, and Perez for the home opener. It would’ve been too much pressure for Pelfrey to pitch the home opener. He needs to put in the least pressurized situations so he has the best chance of pitching successfully.

The rainout game yesterday will be played on May 20th as part of a double header. I’m sure it will be a dual entry double header, as most teams do now. The good old days of buying one ticket for a double header are gone.

Tom Glavine Prepares To Face Mets

Logo used until 1999Image from WikipediaTom Glavine will pitch Saturday afternoon on Fox Sports game of the week against the Mets. He made some comments to the media about his first start against his former team:

“It’s the kind of thing I knew obviously would happen at some point of the year,” Glavine said Thursday. “I guess it’s happening now sooner than I anticipated. Of course it’s going to be weird. It’s going to be very similar to when I faced the Braves for the first time after leaving here.”

There isn’t anything in his comments since he rejoined the Atlanta Braves that we haven’t already heard from Glavine. He’s pretty media-saavy and wouldn’t say something that would make headlines. Hopefully, he’ll have another game like he did to end the Mets season last year.

Braves Fans Can’t Stop Talkin’ Mets Baseball

I love reading the Atlanta Braves blogs because they’re filled with posts about the Mets. Over at WordPress Chief Noc-A-Homa describes in great detail the “curse” of the Mets over the last three years. Of course, the end of last season felt like a curse mostly thanks to Tom Glavine. I reminded the Chief that in 2008 the Braves have Glavine and we have Johan Santana.

Game 1- Post game wrap up

Glavine looked fantastic until the sixth. Joe Smith looked nervous, but he’ll get over that. I liked that Willie trusted him with a lead. Heilman got a little lucky with the double play ball up the middle. Rolen hit that ball pretty sharply. Heilman owes Valentin a dinner for bailing him out. As usual, Wagner can make us fans nervous but comes through in the end. I was very surprised that Willie stuck with Feliciano going into the eighth inning. He’s more of a lefty specialist, one inning at most, type of pitcher to me.

Great D tonight. It was nice to see that they looked so sharp this early in the season. I thought we might see Easley pinch hit for Valentin against Tyler Johnson in the seventh. Valentin’s a shaky right handed hitter at best. I’d really like to see Easley get a lot of at-bat’s this year against lefty’s. Last year Valentin hit .219 against them. It turned out well in the end as he saved the eighth inning with a great play up the middle for another highlight double play.

Let’s Get It On!

If you’re like me and have had enough of reading the meaningless columns filled with predictions for this coming season, it’s finally time to get it on. I’m ready and I hope this version of the Mets are too.

Sunday April 1st 8:05pm ESPN- Glavine vs. Carpenter

This looks to be a great start to the season. National TV, rematch of last year’s NL championship series. Don’t remind me.

Tuesday April 3rd 8:10pm SNY- El Duque vs. Kip Wells

I’m a little worried about Duque this year, and don’t understand the two year contract he signed. Did we need to sign him for more than one year?

Wednesday April 4th 8:10pm ESPN2- Maine vs. Looper

Looper had a good spring, but I still think he’ll flounder as a starter. He’ll be no better than he was as a closer, and we know all too well about that!

Enjoy the series…
