ESPN’s Mike and Mike video interview with Kid Carter trying to explain his comments that appeared to be lobbying for Willie Randolph’s job. It might not be his job for long, but it sure is bad form to publicly posture to be the next manager of the New York Mets.

The Mets are planning to start injured star pitcher Pedro Martinez on June 3 in San Francisco. He’ll make one start for the St. Lucie Mets before joining the team on their road trip next week.
The Mets will have to make a decision about keeping Mike Pelfrey or Claudio Vargas in the rotation, and on the team, at that point. Vargas threw a stinker in Atlanta last week but his other two starts have been solid. He looks to be more consistent than Pelfrey.
Vargas could opt to become a free agent if the Mets designate him for assignment. It’s not a huge loss, but something to consider when making a decision.
My opinion is that Pelfrey needs some time in the minors to perfect his game. He’s got good stuff but isn’t consistent enough. He’s hurting the team.

Florida Marlins (30-20) at New York Mets (23-26) 7:10pm
Andrew Miller (4-3 5.33) vs. Johan Santana (5-3 3.36)
What to watch: The Marlins are starting to put some distance between themselves and the Mets. I’d like to see Nick Evans get a start at first base tonight against Miller, a big lefty. Santana’s last three starts haven’t been great but he’s kept the team in the game. He needs to do that again tonight. He isn’t getting much help from his teammates lately. He may just have to start winning games by himself.
Status quo is the theme of the day. The Wilpons decided to keep Willie Randolph as the Mets manager and the Mets lost again. This time the Florida Marlins were the beneficiaries.
Mike Pelfrey didn’t have it at all. He got hit hard. The big hit came from Luis Gonzalez. He doesn’t have the power anymore, but he can still get the bat on the ball. He had a bases loaded double in a four run third for the Marlins.
I feel like a broken record writing the same game recap over and over. The difference tonight is that I thought the Mets would get a win with Jose Reyes hitting two homers in the first two innings off Ricky Nolasco.
The question that we’re left with is about Mike Pelfrey. Does he have what it takes to be a consistent pitcher at this level? I don’t think that he does right now. He may in the future. He’s had two really bad stinkers in a row now. He hasn’t been able to get past four innings in either start. That doesn’t cut it.
The good news is that Aaron Heilman pitched a clean fourth and fifth. He only gave up one hit and had three strikeouts. This was the perfect game for him to get some work. Pelfrey had already let the game get out of hand.
Matt Wise was shaky again. He gave a run in the eighth inning and left the bases loaded giving up two walks and two hits. His ERA is 6.43 now. Ugly!

Omar Minaya and Willie Randolph addressed the media this afternoon and Willie Ranolph is staying. Basically, they said that the Wilpons wanted to speak to Willie face to face about the comments that he made last weekend to Ian O’Connor. And they wanted to discuss what’s wrong with the Mets and how to get things turned around.
If I was in the Wilpons shoes, I probably would have made a change. I think that there are viable candidates out there to replace Randolph as the New York Mets manager.
I would surmise that they spoke about particular player performances and what to do about several players that have been major disappointments.
Well, there you go. That’s what we’ve been waiting all week for. Nothing has changed. If you thought the booing was bad earlier this season, hold onto your hat tonight. I expect that the Mets are really going to hear it.

What to watch: The big question is: who will be managing the Mets tonight? More news on that to come today. The first place Marlins come to town to take on the fourth place Mets. That sounds horrible! The Mets have been sloppy and uninspired over the past two weeks. I have a feeling that they’re going to hear some boos from the home crowd tonight.
