D-Backs 5 – Mets 2 August 2, 2009

The Mets were victimized by a very solid complete game by Jon Garland. I won’t dwell the fact that the Mets should have signed Garland in the offseason instead of Oliver Perez. Garland only gave up 7 hits and 2 runs, but this is the Mets weak offense that he did it against.

Mike Pelfrey struggled through 5 innings  giving up 3 runs on 107 pitches.

Gary Sheffield made his return to the lineup as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth and stayed in to play left field. He told reporters that he wasn’t thrilled about not starting today, and this is after he wasn’t thrilled about going on the disabled list in the first place.

The Mets are in a bad spot now after losing two of the first three games to the D-Backs. Tomorrow night they go up against Dan Haren. Bad news.

Mets Sheffield Returns; Cancel DFA

The Mets are bringing Gary Sheffield back from the disabled list for today’s game against the D-Backs. To make room on the roster, Robinson Cancel has been designated for assignment.

Sheffield hasn’t played in two weeks due to a right hamstring strain. Initially, it was referred to as a cramp. But when he didn’t play for a week the Mets put him on the DL.

The most interesting thing about him coming back is the talk of keeping light-hitting Cory Sullivan in left field. We’ll see how long that lasts. Sullivan is a quadruple-A player that’s only on the roster due to the numerous injuries the Mets have sustained. Starting him over Sheffield in left shouldn’t last long. I’ve been surprised that he’s been playing over Jeremy Reed.

Game Preview: D-Backs at Mets [Game 104] August 2, 2009

Arizona D-Backs (45-59 Road: 21-26) at New York Mets (50-53 Home: 29-22) 1:10pm

Jon Garland (5-10 4.42) vs. Mike Pelfrey (8-6 4.72)

TV: SNY

What to watch: This is the third of a four game series. Garland hasn’t won a game in almost a month but has pitched pretty well. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a start since June 25. Pelfrey is 1-1 in his last two starts but he’s pitched 13.1 innings and allowed only 3 runs.

Mets Injury Updates: Billy Wagner, Jose Reyes

NEW YORK - MAY 02: Billy Wagner #13 of the Ne...

The Mets have to be encouraged that Billy Wagner threw an inning in a minor league rehab game for the St. Lucie Mets yesterday. He threw 10 pitches and got two strikeouts and one ground ball for a clean inning. The Mets have already told Wagner that they’re not picking up his option for next season, so he must be intent on getting a contract with someone in the offseason.

It’s nice to think that the Mets could have Francisco Rodriguez, Billy Wagner, and J.J. Putz finishing off games for them late this season. The problem is that the team appears that they may be too far out of the playoff picture for it to matter.

The Mets also announced before yesterday’s game that Jose Reyes didn’t run the bases in Florida as he was supposed to. He’s still just doing some light jogging, not running full speed. The word from the team is that he may run the bases this weekend. I can’t wait to see him back with the team. He’s missed more than any of the big name players on the DL right now. The dropoff from his production to the backup players is huge. Again, he may be coming back too late for it to make a difference this season though.

Game Preview: D-Backs at Mets [Game 103] August 1, 2009

d-backs logoArizona D-Backs (45-58 Road: 21-25) at New York Mets (49-53 Home: 28-22) 7:10pm

Max Scherzer (6-6 3.61) vs. Oliver Perez (2-3 7.42)

TV: WPIX

What to watch: Scherzer has been pitching pretty well this season: 111 K’s and only 40 BB’s. He’s been a little inconsistent but not compared to the guy he’s pitching against today. Perez hasn’t won a game since July 8 and hasn’t gone more than 6 innings since coming off the disabled list four starts ago.
